Mornin all how's things?

Right to the point, last night was bike night down the local mcdonalds, turned out to be quite a nice evening, anyway a couple of us decided to go the north cliffs way home to avoid any police, and they are generally quite nice twisties with good scenery.
We got through them ok and back onto a stretch of dual carriage way which is about half a mile long, nice and straight, the 3 of us open up the throttle, and changing from 3rd to 4th at high revs my bike decides to get a bit snakey underneath me. It only lasted a split second, but was enough to make me s**t meself. The road was a bit damp in places but not too bad, I'm just wondering what caused the tank slapper, the only things I can think of was my gear change was a bit snappy and I hit a damp patch while doing so.
I'm just wondering if there was anything else that may have caused it so I can try and avoid it happening again.

Thanks in advance.

I'm going with snappy gear-change/exuberant throttle over a damp patch.

Bikes being pushed can wobble and twitch from time to time, especially over wet and greasy bits.

If the bars went from side to side you'd call it head shake.

A tank slapper is a very violent head shake, so that the bars hit or almost hit the tank. Normally get them when accelerating very hard, such that the front wheel leaves the ground slightly and skips along the surface.

If you don't know if it was a tankslapper or not...it wasn't a tankslapper.

Sounds like the rear broke traction for a split second. Nothing more than a twitch. Wait 'til you get a real tankslapper...!

Similar thing happened to me a few months ago - but this was on a back lane. How I didn't come off is something of a miracle. The bike more than snaked. I was so freaked, I went back to see if I could find any reason for the sudden, abrupt and almost total loss of traction. Turned out to be an old puddle of tar about 6 feet long - which, when damp (as it was - in fact, it was pretty much the only part of the road that was), had a surface like black ice. Had the 'puddle' been a couple of yards longer I swear I'd have binned it. The shiny damp tar surface, combined with speed + throttle was a very bad mix.

Pretty much this, my fireblade shook its head when I was pinning it in 2nd with the front wheel skipping while overtaking a car (poor riding on my part). Threw me out of the seat and off the pegs Laughing .
Somehow I stayed on but it shook me up for a few minutes.
Gave the bloke riding behind a good laugh though Embarassed

You will know when you have had a proper tank slapper.

This. It's a terrifying experience, and you have no control over it.

A boffin's opinion on causes of tank slappers

Here

The Paul Orritt video is just horrible. I'd seen it along time ago and found the article above when googling his injuries. Smashed shoulder blades (among many others injuries) ouchie. Pale

Doesn't look like a traditional tank slapper although much the same result.

Actually looks like you were at the edge of the turbulence cone caused by the overtaking rider and the air pressure differential on each side of the bike caused the problem.

If you just shook your head and carried on that's good.

I had one tank slapper a couple of winters ago, on some spilled petrol/diesel/oil.

Felt the front go a bit light and unresponsive maybe a mile previous, feeling came back then went for an overtake, the back end slid out slightly and then the handlebars went crazy, smashed my knees into the sides of tank and frame a good few times until it slowed enough to let me take over again.

I didn't control it well after only having the bike a few months but it made me forget how to ride a bike.

Thanks for that everyone, so it sounds like the rear broke traction for a second then. Still scared the living daylights out of me lol. Felt like the rear got bored of following the front and wanted to lead for a while, well in truth probably only slid out an inch or two. Thanks for the info everyone.

If it's not lock to lock and it doesn't spit you off, it's not a tankslapper, it's just a wobble.

That seemed to be over very quickly watching the vid. Bet it didn't seem that way to you! Laughing

Mine seemed to last forever, and only settled very slowly as the speed came down (or so it felt).

Usually its when the front comes off the ground slightly(goes light) and comes down slightly crooked causing the bars to go from side to side violently.

Sadly I had a major one back in May last year, may the 5th to be precise at 9:05am at 125mph........it was too far gone and I came off at just over 100mph......wrecked my minted zk4 thou Sad

Poor suspension set up can cause it as well, even a poor rear shock.

I use to love getting a shake on up front but now I shit myself,I'll get it back though but for now I'll take it a bit easy(zx9r).

Iv'e had a massive tank slapper on my hornet from a sketchy landed wheelie which put a penny dent in my tank from the switch gear cables.
