decided im gonna get a GSXR 1000 and gonna ditch the R1 after being with R1's since 2006 finally fed up of no serious torque below 7k rpm

my question is which is a better road bike out of GSXR 1000 K3/K4 or GSXR 1000 k5/k6

i am going to view a k3 and k5 tomorrow on my way back from scotland so would be good to get a heads up from any of you that know.

K5 is regarded as THE best, was certainly the best of the few I have ridden.

The latter model is more compact feeling and has a bit more top end apparently without losing out on bottom end.

Plenty of go from low revs despite the high gearing.

Apparantly BMW bought two of this model when developing the S1000RR - though was probably the latest out at the time.

cheers only thing making me hesitate on the k5 is the frame recall where the welding can fail crack and fail causing the bike to snap in half, but i guess this only happened on 1% of k5/k6 bikes

If that, they recall stuff to be overly safe

Like recalling every bike they sold in the last 10 years to change the master brake cylinder even with no reported failures

I wouldn't let it worry you, just check it's been done

One bit where the Yamaha is guaranteed to be better is the brakes - I know on the K5/K6 you can easily modify it to take Yamaha radial brakes. Probably similar on the K3/K4.

Can't see any reason to choose the earlier model if you can afford the latter.

I had a zk4 thou and it was the muts nuts,154rwhp and it pulled like a fucker.

Great bike for commuting as well, great for wheelies and generally just a hooligan bike.....I thrashed the tits of mine and couldn't help ride everywhere flat out.

I wish I still had it,go with what you feel is right but they're both top notch bikes.

I've attached a pic of the bike,it had tasteful mods

K5 swingarm,k7 slipper clutch,bigger brakes etc.

Hey the k3/k4 gixxer thou is ok too! I have a k4 and I love it but I haven't had any other 1000cc sport bikes so what do I know eh? It's not a bad bike anyway is what I'm saying.

Got the stock exhaust system on mine which is a bit gay but I don't have the £700 to change it, lol!

There's a recall for the brakes as well, so you can check that's been done / get it done.

with the 08 R1 i have flashed the ecu with a race spec flash, i have tried the 16 tooth front sprocket, had the bike custom mapped but still all the real torque is above 9k rpm whereas the gsxr have this from tick over.

this makes the R1 a great track bike and is plenty fast, but being up scotland and touring with my girl on the back i can feel the lag when i open the throttle from 4k rpm.
the gsxr dont lag at all

to me its like the R1 is like broad band internet whereas the gsxr is like fibre optic lol

jus now need to sell the 08 R1 with 20k miles for £4500 any takers lol

funny that the k1 has more torque than the 08 R1

Possibly has less peak power, though the R1 has never really been up with the competition since the GSXR came along from what I've seen.
Remember a torque figure alone is meaningless - my push bike has more torque than either of them - but at rather a lower rpm, so not quite so useful for lifting the front wheel at 100mph!
