In Performance Berks Sept issue, a comparison on track, ridden by Michael Rutter.

Any point? Although the GSXR actually produces more peak power than the RGV, is it not obvious that the two will be worlds apart in how they actually perform?

If you offered me a current factory 4 stroke, I think I'd try it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to be able to do much with it, but I'd at least take it for a spin. But those old smokers? No thanks mate, I'm only mortal!

Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe top level race 4 strokes are every bit as lethal in inexperienced hands? I haven't really followed any bike racing since the demise of the 2Ts - it seemed to me that they were just so far above what you and I could ever hope to tame that we lost something very special when they were retired. I'm not really even talking about the lap times achievable on either by experienced racers, but surely those old GP bikes were a lot harder to tame? Rutter seemed to think so.

I only have to watch a 30sec second clip of Wayne Gardner on the NSR500, to realise again how lethal 500cc GP racing was in the 80's. Mind you Gardner was out of control on pretty much anything he rode, but I reckon you'd have more chance of staying on a very angry bull for the length of a GP than you would on those things.

Those guys definitely had boulders for balls! Laughing

I'm not knocking 990cc MotoGP, I expect 4stroke 990 lap times are quicker than anything ever before, but they don't look mad, bad and inherently dangerous like the unstable explosive's that 500cc racing once was!

I reckon the power delivery is what makes the difference. I'm not surprised at all that the Gixer 1000 has more peak power. It's also going to be delivered in a much more linear fashion, meaning they can stay on power more of the time, without worrying about mental power-bands, and making it easier to ride harder.

If the stroker engine were put in the modern chassis the 1000 would still pull faster lap times due to being easier to ride, still too much for me though. I don't know if you follow MX at all, but the modern 450F's produce nearly the same peak HP as the older 500 smokers, I saw a dyno graph somewhere of a CR500 and a CRF450R, yet the 500 still has a legendary reputation as a widow-maker being ridden solely by certifiable loons. Again it's power delivery making it so.

I would jump on a CBR600F without worrying too much, I'd be gentle and cautious with it but even an NSR250/any 250 Racer still makes me wonder about whether I could cope. Despite the 600 being much more powerful.

I think all out and out race bikes (not bikes derived from road bikes) would be pretty lethal in inexperienced hands. The main reason is how stiff and unforgiving they are coupled with a lack of weight. This before you even talk about the power. They only work when being pushed near the limit and in my painful experience give you very little feed back as to when you step over it.
That RGV is pretty valuable and I don't think MR would have been pushing it too far, plus it would have been jetted safe. Interesting article but I reckon the RGV could have beat it if set and ridden to the
optimum.

Knife edge powerband? Tyres that only work where you're 110% on it? No thanks.

Leon Camier made a really good comparison between Superbikes, which are loosely related to what we ride and with rubber that we could conceivably buy, and GP bikes:

https://m.motomatters.com/analysis/2014/08/15/leon_camier_explains_the_difference_betw.html

Basically, I don't think any of us mere mortals would be able to use GP Bridgestones.

Remember also that the electronics on GP bikes are designed to make you go as fast as possible, not stop you high siding or falling off.

Basically, I think they'd both be savage.

Rossi made a comment recently about the speed of modern motogp bikes. Pretty much said they are too fast.

Difficult to find a circuit that hasn't been altered since the 500 era but I reckon Phillip Island hasn't been. It's also a track that has a bit of everything in it...A good test track.

500cc Grand Prix Kenny Roberts, Jr. Suzuki RGV500 1:32.743 1 October 1999

MotoGP Márquez Honda RC213V 1:28.108 20 October 2013

Check out the 250cc time.
250cc Grand Prix Álvaro Bautista Aprilia RSV 250 1:32.710 5 October 2008

Most impressed by the production bike.
Production Superbike Jason O'Halloran Honda CBR1000RR 1:32.921 1 March 2008

500cc 2 strokes with savage power delivery....those times are impressive...very.

Motegi, Sachenring, Catalunya, and Brno also spring to mind.

RGV500 vs a moddern 1200cc twin road bike:

Not THAT much in it, actually.
Ok, they're not shown to scale and of course the Ducati is particularly revvy.

I initially had a RZ500 (RD500) because I hadn't properly read the captions and it was actually VERY similar if rpm scale was the same, but enlarged hp so the smoker matched the new bike in height of graph.
