Hi all, I've been having a few electrical problems with my triumph sprint st 1050. The other day the bike wouldn't start (last used about 8 hours prior) and would only start after being plugged into an optimate for a few hours. About 10 mins after this, the bike stalled and all the electrics went out. Turned the ignition on and the dash lit up but bike wouldn't turn over. I've tested the voltage on the battery and it sits at between 11.5-12.3V disconnected, ignition on and engine running. I've connected the battery to an external charger which then charges up to about 12.7 when not on the bike.

I'm no electrician but the fact that no matter what the bike does has little effect on the battery sounds to me like it just isn't charging from the bike, and will only charge when connected to an optimate or a charger, does this mean the stator or ref/rec is playing up and the battery is fine?

12.7 volts seems a bit low - how old is the battery? If it is less than 2 years old, you could have a faulty Reg/Rec that's killing it.

Try giving it an overnight charge, and check the battery voltage when :
1. Disconnected from the bike.
2. Connected to the bike with nothing switched on.
3. Engine running at tickover.
4. Engine running at 4000 rpm.
and report back.

Not sure on exact age of the battery as I've only had the bike for 3 months, so could be up to 7 years old (unlikely though)

Will charge up overnight and check tomorrow, what should a fully charged 12v battery be sat at when disconnected?

If the reading is less than 13v whilst the bike is running and even at 4-5k and above then you'll need to look further.

Next I'd test the voltage output of the alternator, disconnect the plug that comes from the stator and there should be three pins that you want to test, these are the three wires that come from the stator as its a three phase.

Using a multimeter set to AC volts range 100 or above put one probe on one of the wires/pins and the other probe on another, take a reading.

Then move one probe to another and take a reading, then swap the probes around and again take another reading so you've taken three separate readings, one from each wire and the results should so a minimum of 45v and they should all be consistent.

This test is carried out with the bike running @ roughly 4-5k so its much easier to have someone there to help as it can be a bit fiddly.

You can also test these wires for continuity/resistance.

If the readings are low you could have a failing stator but if they're good it points to a faulty reg/rec,but check all wiring etc as it could be something simple.
