So what would you recommend.
I have had to deal with people machines with iTunes installed and the headaches that it seem to bring. Not a fan of the apple interface either.

I am not really interested in streaming from the site, I can stream music from my server if you have a need.

Not currently using FLAC, but may well think about if I can find a good site - codecs and converters are available if needed them (player also available for my phone).

thinking about amazon as I currently have an account with them after buying a book a few year back. bit rate is variable, normally averaging 256kbps which is ok, but we all know more is better.

oh nearly forgot, fairly important not having DRM, I play my music on several different machines as well as backing it up across several different machine, and sometime streaming it across the network before the files are copied across to every machine.

https://play.google.com/music/

But I'm finding your post really confusing.

Do you want to be able to listen to your music regardless of where you are?

I will be able to do that providing I have copied it to my server media library and my server is running (it currently giving issues with the streaming library for some reason, I will get to the bottom of it thought).

Did English suddenly become a second language to you?

I know you say you don't really want to stream, but Spotify premium is essential to me.

WHS 2011, I will be using W7, Vista, XP, WP8 and whatever OS a random computer maybe using.

My server can stream all over my LAN and to outside my LAN to any given browser from my understanding (never actually used it on anything other than IE and my phone so cant 100% sure here). being able to stream from another web site (amazon provides a library streaming service iirc) is only a nice little bonus - heck I could use one drive if I get really desperate

all I need is a place to get digital music that does not have DRM and is not iTunes, maybe looking at FLAC otherwise as higher bit rate as possible.

most of my music that came from CD is ripped to drive at WMA lossless which often indicates well over 600kbps and sometime over 1Mbps.

all music is generally stored in at least 3 locations, my main rig which is running windows 7, my theatre machine that is running vista and my server that is running WHS11. I would think that the majority of downloading will be done on my main machine, each file will then be copied to the hard drives of the other 2 machines (or downloaded strait to the server and copied from that), this is why it is important not to have DRM I cant imagine having to download loads of track (currently over 8500) if a single machine goes down and I need to rebuild the library.

so in a nut shell, music download, high bit rate, no DRM, reasonable cost are musts.

from site streaming would be a bonus but not really bother as I can stream from my own server

FLAC is a maybe. need to get some sample files and test them on all formats that will be used and how well it works for streaming

All music is digital unless you still buy tapes or vinyl.

To get the music without DRM and not using shitty Itunes, use torrents.

To stream the music, why not stick with mp3. FLAC is nice, but if you are going to be listening in all different locations, no point using up so much more bandwidth for little quality gain.

English is not my strong suit, tiredness makes it worse.

also, I cant listen to spotify in a location where there is no signal - which is there are no signal, I would be able to play what's on my phone or my MP3 player.

as an FYI spotify is DRM, I specifically stated no DRM.

torrentz.me doesn't seem to be functioning my end, it also a torrent which having them in the past tend to be full of little nasty things. its most likely blacked without using a proxy most likely due to copyright infringement

If your English is a bit rubbish, why not ask on a forum that uses your 1st language?

Might have a bit more luck & you might find it easier to ask a question and understand the answer instead of asking a question on an English motorbike forum

Spotify premium allows you to download playlists to your device. I use it every single day and it's been invaluable out here in Afghanistan where I can download songs at night in my accommodation and then listen to them at work where I have no Internet.

use torrents or buy the CD, or both.

I still buy the occasional vinyl and will download a copy.

I store the music in my library as FLAC which I mostly rip from CD's or the piratebay. I will have my media server converting music on the fly to mp3 or when I sync to my phone or iPod to v0 mp3. There has been only one song where I've been able to tell the difference between FLAC and v0 mp3. I was in a dead silent room using a friends £300 headphones and headphone amp via a line out.
