Aha. Looking forward to the results of this. Should transform the bike.
Got loads of time for tuning these little strokers. Love the fact that you can get a brand new big bore kit and piston for £100! ____________________ 1988 Kawasaki KMX 200

^Agreed.
Where are the £100 big bore tuning kits with all the parts you need for 80's 200cc strokers?
Will that new carb fit the existing inlet manifold or will you need to a get a different one? Oh and I suppose you'll need a rear sprocket with a few teeth less now you've upped the capacity by over 50% |

Nope, I'm just going to bolt this lot to it and it will run perfectly straight out of the box without any further fettling required
You can actually get a big bore kit for less than £50 for the AM6, I went for one of the Airsal ones though as they are fairly reputable but don't have the Polini price tag.
The new carb is designed specifically for the AM6 so will bolt straight onto the existing manifold. I was tempted by a slightly cheaper 21mm flatslide but it would have meant messing with manifold adapters so went for this one just to keep it simple.
As for rear sprocket, will see how it goes with current setup first. May end up adding a few teeth to the rear though.... if it doesn't power wheelie in every gear!
I expect my next purchase is more likely to be a heavy duty clutch or new crank though, will see which one gives up first
Have had a really hectic week and so not had time to do a thing with this yet but I've just moved the NSR into shed tent (which incidentally is NOT a sneaky secondary workshop ) and am just about to start the top end transplant tonight. Will see how far I get then update later ____________________ Current Bikes / Projects: 1999 Rieju RS1 50

I don't think so, soda blasting is actually a very gentle way of cleaning a carb. So long as it's rinsed and blown through with an airline there's no reason it should cause a problem.
Once I'd put a gasket on it and given it a run out for the MOT it was actually running fine, it was just really underwhelming though
I'd had in my head it would, for some magical reason, be infinitely more awesome than the RS2 with the power of a race tuned RGV250 and I'd be doing one handed wheelies while waving to R1s as I passed them.... but it wasn't
Anyway, started the rebuild tonight so I'll soon be doing my one handed wheelies
So drained coolant then removed hoses etc and off with it's head!

Some carbon but doesn't look too bad really, genuine Minarelli head too.
Barrel off next

Actually looks in fairly good order
A comparison to the new one

Piston out next, again some carbon build up but in pretty good order with some very minor scoring.

New gasket, barrel and piston on

Remember to fit new studs

Fck it, I'll use them next time
While I've got the thermostat out I give that a test

Then on the new head

Then all built back up

Sorted
Off with the carb next.

Liars!
I'm going to have to have a think about what to do for air filter now
Original air box can't move back another mm as the frame is in the way.
I've only got around 30mm between the carb and the frame so not room for a pod filter and not even sure an elbow would get in there
https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1719_zpshb73vqgg.jpg
One option would be to use some 32mm hose with a pod filter on the end but it's going to be more £££ again
Ideally I could do with a rubber that is 32mm ID and 54mm OD then cut slits in the airbox so I can clamp it around it.... or just duct tape and cable tie the hell out of it all ____________________ Current Bikes / Projects: 1999 Rieju RS1 50

All very interesting!
fook me that big bore kit with the cheeky bridged exhaust port has got some serious time/area compared to the 50cc port. It looks very RGV250 inside the big block cylinder!
I see that like the Dellorto PHBG21 I fitted to my Peugeot, your carb has a threaded flange on the inlet side. Could you not measure up the hose ID and length required, and then have a machined billet alloy bell mouth spacer made up to fit the gap and give a nice big radius into the carb too?
I'd certainly rather spend my money on getting someone to machine me a nice one off bit of alloy, than spend it all on hose's, elbows and remote pod filters. Find a local machinist/engine reconditioner etc and find out what he likes to drink? |

+1 On getting something shiny rather than a bodgework of pipes and clips.
I didn't notice until it was pointed out but that port is a lot larger than the 50 barrel.
You just reminded me of a car show I went to last weekend and I saw this:

You can't see very well, but I think it revved to 13K, Daytona barrel and head, so I doubt it was 50cc any more. I wish I'd found the bloke that owned it. Ya bastids! Stop encouraging me to spend money on this thing!
Having a stack on there did very briefly cross my mind but I'd set myself a budget of around £8 - £10 to sort this, was just about to click buy it now on a tiny spurious Chinese crappy little filter with a 30' bend which should just fit
Having a bellmouth on there would be badass but I've never had anything machined like that, wouldn't know where to start and just can't thow any more big money (anything over £10 is big money right now ) at this at the moment otherwise Mito is never going to happen (that's not to mention the dead NSR of which we shall not speak... or mention).
It wouldn't end there either because it would then be 'hmmmm.... yeah, cool but that manifold is a bottleneck so need some race tuned replacement for that.... and then what? Standard spannie???? No no no, I need a hand crafted titanium work of art and then I'll be ready for dyno runs. Just need to upgrade the brakes then and it will be a rideable machine....' £4000 later and I have a nippy fun little bike that's worth about £1k
I'm going getting my little Chinese filter ____________________ Current Bikes / Projects: 1999 Rieju RS1 50

Manged to hold back on buying the tiny filter and (after much internetting) I think I've finally come up with a sound alternative / compromise for my air intake needs (until I can afford to spend on a custom machined stack for it) ..... within my £10 budget too
Will update when it lands ____________________ Current Bikes / Projects: 1999 Rieju RS1 50

nice bit of machined alloy there, the huge bridged exhaust port has a distinct competition look to it. looking forward to hearing about this bike coming to life with the blingy bits fitted ____________________ 1988 Kawasaki KMX 200

Yeah it's certainly going to transform the bike one way or another
Will be very interesting to see how it runs and rides but resisting a start up for now. I borrowed a small torque wrench today (mine only goes down to 28nm) to properly torque the head nuts and I've sorted the throttle cable.
Don't want to put the exhaust back on yet though as I'm going to have to remove the rear shock to get the old airbox out and need to play with the exhaust mount / rear brake pedal too.... am also considering making a new end can from the Mito one as I have a replacement on the way for that ____________________ Current Bikes / Projects: 1999 Rieju RS1 50

you do know that to really get the proper use out of that big bore kit, you will need a new spannie, and I would watch the crank as well the standard one just about copes with the 50cc.
just sayin' |

Yes mate, a new spannie would be nice.... as would lots of other things (including a nice shiny custom stack), it's just not having anything else right now though
As per previous posts
Just_James wrote: | ...I'm resisting doing anything to the bottom end as it will just get too over involved and hold up the Mito project.... so I'll just get a new crank when I snap this one |
Just_James wrote: | ...I expect my next purchase is more likely to be a heavy duty clutch or new crank though, will see which one gives up first |
Yeah I'm aware the crank is gonna be stressed I'm just going with the 'it'll be reet' mentality
For around another £200 I can get a racing crank and complete exhaust system which is cheap tuning really but I'm just not putting any more money into this bike at the moment. Realistically it will probably only get occasional use until the Mito is done anyway and then once that's finished... I don't now just how often I'm going to want to ride this ____________________ Current Bikes / Projects: 1999 Rieju RS1 50

Job for tonight was to get that old airbox out (weight savin innit )
https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1722_zpsj5u3e80g.jpg
So off with the rear shock
https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1723_zpsefxfpxq0.jpg
While I'm here I want to sort somewhere for the new choke lever. As far as choke levers go it's quite a neat little thing but I don't want it on display and I'll rarely (if ever) use it so just tied it under the subframe where I can get to it if I ever need to.
https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1724_zpskycuo6wo.jpg
Old airbox out, redundant and loft bound
https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1725_zpsfkbfgdv5.jpg
Next job was to fit the new exhaust mount (too awkward to get any pics) that doubles as the brake pedal mount. The one that was fitted was worn and bodged which was making the brake pedal stiff, replaced that and rear brake is now spot on
So all built back up
https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1726_zps1wsn0npo.jpg
Very tempted to add fuel and start up... but it's late, daughter in bed, neighbours probably already tired of the sound of 2t ... so I'm exercising a little patience
First start up tomorrow ____________________ Current Bikes / Projects: 1999 Rieju RS1 50

My intake has yet to arrive so it's just running 'filterless' there.
Am hoping the 'strainer' will arrive in the next couple of days so I can give it a proper run at weekend and see how things are. Initial thoughts are that I'll likely need to upjet a bit from the 95 main I'm running there though. ____________________ Current Bikes / Projects: 1999 Rieju RS1 50

Finally got some time on Sunday to give this a little run!
Could immediately tell the difference with extra power but rode less than mile and came back as it was obvious it was running too lean and that's not what I want with a new top end!
Brought it in and pulled the plug which confirmed it was very lean.
That was with a 95 main jet and the biggest I have is a 110 so put that in and went for another try.
Again, much improvement but also again, obviously too lean so headed straight back...
...nearly home and I hear something plastic clattering down the road, I instinctively knew it was a bit of my bike (I know the sound of a bit of my bike tumbling down the road when I hear it) so stopped and looked behind me but couldn't see anything anywhere. Turned around and covered my tracks and there it was
https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1736_zpsmoz4edeh.jpg
https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1737_zpsfvvsiikd.jpg
That'll be my front mudguard then

As soon as I saw it I remembered that I'd left the front bolts out of it when I rebuilt the front end (as I had some stainless ones to put in) so it had been flapping around on just the rear bolts since the day I took it for MOT!
Trying to draw a positive from it, it was quite nice to see that it has made a clean break in the plastic so my repairs to the bolt holes had stood up really well

Well, such is life, one of those things, could've been worse an all that.
Ordered a few more jets to play with which arrived yesterday along with... finally.... my budget air intake solution!
So here it is...
Wait for it...
Don't laugh!...

Okay it's not a beautiful bit of machined alloy but it'll do the job for now!
Cost me 6.04 euros then 6 euros for postage which translated into £8.89 so within my £10 max budget ____________________ Current Bikes / Projects: 1999 Rieju RS1 50

Well I ended up taking on a couple of big non-bike projects to bring in some fundage over winter so haven't been home much over the past few weeks and when I have been, I've had no time or energy for the bikes.
I'd jumped the main jet up to a 130 a couple of weeks ago and it seemed to be running really nice with excellent throttle response, am yet to try it out on the road though.
I'm planning to take a day off on Sunday and will hopefully at least be able take this out for a run so made the effort tonight to make a start on repairing the front mudguard.

Put that to one side while I had a quick tidy up in the workshop.... one swift passing blow from the bar of the chainsaw and I effortlessly created a new problem!
