IoM TT or Poland

So next year I was planning on going to the TT for race week but around a similar time a few friends are going to Poland via Amsterdam and Germany.

I'm fairly certain £ wise it's one or the other, just can't justify which to do before I hit 25 (never been abroad yet on a bike and never been to the TT either).

I really can't decide which at present although I'm leaning towards touring Europe.

So any advice for either case? I'm still researching and saving at present myself but time to plan is very limited (getting a few useful tips off Polish guys at work alongside offers of shelter in certain regions where they have family).

The only reason I'd go to Poland is for the same reason I went in the first place, Auschwitz. IMO to go to Poland on just a social trip or for the sake of it isn't all that exciting, all I recall on my trip was snow, rain, wet, cold and just emptiness. (wasn't done on a motorbike).

The TT gets booked up way way in advance, ferries B&Bs campsites etc.
If you haven't booked by now or get in a bit sharpish you will be going to Poland.

Did Zebrugge-Poland-Berlin-Amsterdam a few years back and its a long boring ride on Autobahns all the way, and Polish roads are terrible. Beautiful country mind you, but you'll need a few days off the bike after pounding the highways. Bike theft was still a big issue when I was there too.

Glad I did it, but wouldn't do it again.

no contest, TT everytime.

for any biker its just one of the best few weeks ever, even none bikers love it.

As said, might struggle with crossings and nice accommodation but more comes available next year when people drop out.

I doubt you'll get ferry tickets for the TT now. You'll have to wait until February and grab some when the unclaimed tickets go back on sale.

If you get the chance though, do it!

Me and my wife spent a few days in Poland on the bike in 2012 and to be honest I wouldn't rush back. The people are ok and there's nothing much that's actually that bad but the roads/heavy freight traffic and the scenery are for the most part lousy.

If it's the TT or Poland then for me the TT wins hands down but if you substitute the Alps or preferably the Pyrenees instead of Poland then I know where I'd be heading

I disagree with the opinion of missing out if you haven't booked now. I've booked ferry tickets and accommodation in March and managed to get there with no problems. Just got to be on the ball with the Steam Packet website, loads of people cancel after February when the full amount is due. Accommodation wise, I go for homestay which has been brilliant for me when I've visited.

Well I'm swayed away from Poland now just need to justify the TT.

I can fairly easily get hold of tickets and bookings when needed (know a fair few who keep an eye out for cancellations).

It's one of those things I just want to do whilst Im young, but I am wary if it will float my boat (total cost is equivalent to a few trackdays and Rallies which I may have to skip for it) only one way to find out though!

It depends on whether you like racing or not.

Personally, I'd rather do a tour and see some of the world rather than sit and watch bikes fly past at 200 mph. I've been to several GPS (car and bike) and I just don't really enjoy it.

However, I think I'm in the minority

Did the TT this year. Did 600+ miles during the week around a fairly small island as there's lots to see, stunning scenery and plenty to do apart from the racing.

Most evenings, do a lap but always end up at the Bungalow watching / listening to nutters going up the hill on the back wheel, exhausts popping and quickshifts in full efffect.

Didn't spent that much time sat on my arse either!

As said above, Homestay was amazing value and with the attitude of the locals / endless supply of WI cake / tea / coffee - for me it's a no brainer.

Do it before the fun police kill it off.

If you want good bike roads then I can think of very few places that are WORSE than Poland. It may have it's attractions as a country but in my experience motorcycling is not one of them. The roads are busy and full of heavy, smelly freight that rut the roads. The only way I would conceivably visit Poland again on a bike is to pass through it as quickly as possible!

Never been there as I tend to head South, but as the mates are going I assumed there was a reason. I would just spend some time in the Czech Republic, or head for Spain or Italy as I usually do. Anything to avoid those guys trying to blow up their engines in the pub car park half the night.
