AM Leathers are built to last - good protection - can be pricey though

Am I right in thinking that leathers offer more protection than textiles, but less warmth (generally)? Yes, not necessarily
If I try to order off the net and base the size ordered on the size textiles I have and a few measurements from the manufacturers size guide, am I doomed to fail? Yes. Although waist sizes should be exactly that some will fit more snugly than others and some leg lengths will be longer or shorter. Go to a shop and support them rather than buying online
Is there any brands to avoid, I know sometimes you get what you pay for but there's a huge difference in prices? Buy the leathers that actually fit you properly rather than going by price. Cheap ones with knee protecting on your shins will do precisely fuck all to keep your kneecaps shiny and in one piece if you happen to take a trip down some tarmac. Look for reinforced panels and double stitching.
Is it really worth getting leathers? Depends on you and what you ride/how you ride/where you ride
*I did have a set of 1 piece leathers for a while for doing track days (badly) but I got them off a pal and there was no sizing in them.
Thanks |
I have always worn A* leathers but as one of those wimmin types the range I choose from is a tad more restricted and these are the ones I know fit me off the peg. Go to a shop and try them on to make sure that armour on your shoulders, elbows, hips and knees all sits in the correct place and that you can (sorta) walk around in them. They should be snug but not too tight that you lose feeling in your extremities, a bit of wriggling around on the floor to get trousers on is perfectly fine and somewhat hilarious to watch if you have an audience. There are tons of different brands for you to choose from. Pick the best fitting one but check the quality of the stitching and if it has elasticated/breathable panels included.
If you buy two piece leathers and intend to do track stuff with them then they should zip together all the way round rather than the little section at the back. They will give a little over time as the leather loosens up but they shouldn't go up a size so bear that in mind when you buy.
Or you could go for M2M and there are plenty of good companies out there who will make you a custom suit for more or less the same money as an off the peg one. Ride did a bit about a company that some of the racers use for their stuff. For the life of me I cannot remember what they are called! I will see if I can dig it out.
I have slid down the road in textiles and leathers now and my leathers stood up better than the textiles did. Scuffs compared to a melted patch so I prefer leathers over textiles

Also the size quoted on bike leathers is utterly meaningless other than to compare two sets of leathers of the same make.
So a 38cm jacket of Brand X will be smaller than a 40cm Brand X but I'd suggest that if any part of it actually turns out to be 38cm, that it is purely by accident. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. I have never bought brand new. I get barely worn ebay bargains for sub 120 and spend 20 getting the inside dry cleaned.
Easy to ask for sizing ie, height weight, jean size, shoulders etc.
I've found rst, richa and a* size guides to be accurate, but only for my size obviously. ____________________ Previous: GSF600, FZR600 x2, ZXR750, XT600 Tenere, CB125, CZ125, ETZ 250, ER5, CCM R30, DRZ400, RF600x4, RF900x2, GS500, VTR1000F, 640 SMC, CB250 NIGHTHAWK, GT550x3, GPX750 TE610, CB500, X11x2, SV650, ZING 125, TL1000R,CB250 Superdream, CBR1100XX |

I have no idea what's going on with the sizing, Why the fvck can't they all just be sized in inches,
then we would know what we are doing when buying them. There's no uniformity in European sizing either
it's been made difficult for difficultys sake.
I've bought 3 sets of leathers from ebay. 4 if you include the wifes. Hers fit perfect and are as good as new,
her whole set (RST) was £83 bought from two separate sellers
I'm a pretty normal sized bloke. 6ft, 32" waist 43"chest. My RST Razor leathers fit perfect, like a second
skin but are quite restrictive when on the bike. £60
The trousers from my hein Gericke leathers fit great and are better quality than the RST stuff. No stretch nylon bits,
just full leather construction. The jacket that came with them is too big for me though. The previous owner
must have had a physique like a spud on a stick. Looking for the same jacket in my size, but the set
only cost me £20 so even if the jacket goes in the bin the trousers were worth the £20
I also bought Frank Thomas 0ne piece which I got for about £50, it was just a bit too small, I like
leathers tight but there's tight and tight enough to cause a serious injury just slinging a leg over a bike.
Sold them on for £110 plus postage.
If I'm off for a bimble, then i wear textiles, If I know I'm going to end up doing higher speeds then it's
leathers every time.
I gave my Richa mesh jacket a go yesterday and it worked too well, I was cold, but there is a
wind/waterproof zip in bit and a thermal one too, I'll try the thermal liner next time.
Under 60mph it was okay but over that it was pretty chilly. But it's the first time I've ever got off a bike with
dry pits, so that's something. ____________________ Currently enjoying products from Ford, Mazda and Yamaha
