Hi all, basically after setting up barcodes to help me manage stock better.
Parts are stored in a big box, so ideally put a barcode on the box and scan to tell me what is in there and allow me to update if I sell something.
Been googling all night and nothing is making any sense to me.
Thanks, Grant

Similar but different how about QR code (quick codes). Example of on line generator here (there are others). Ok so long as you don't use acres of text (so the image has many many dots).

I mention as most camera/tablets have a QR reader app. There's even a company who will do you a set weatherproofed with your medical info on it to attach to a helmet in case of an off.

Open a terminal session

yum install or apt-get barcode

then for example:

barcode -b 12345678 -u mm -g +100+100 -o tempfile.pcl

lp tempfile.pcl

So have you sorted the backend out?

Barcodes are just graphical versions of characters, so you need something, form or similar to lookup the value in the barcode to find the relevant contents.

Or have I missed the point and you plan to do something different?

(ps if you have the excel backend sorted, upload a copy I'd be interested to)

That's the one we use here to replace damaged codes on our books if we want to retain the barcodes (very rare, just re-barcode is easier)
