Because if you get enough viewers you can make considerable amounts of money from it enough to be able to stop working.

You see it through youtube all the time, extremely popular channels.

Epicmealtime, FPSRussia, prankvsprank.

Look at their first videos they were normal working people like you and me, after the ad revenue started rolling in most of them stopped their day jobs and did the odd video here and there.

Even if they aren't super popular they might be picked for TVadverts like Rehat the guy who dresses up as a car seat and pranks fast food drive through workers. There are some channels which are so popular they can hand out $1000 in a 5 min video and still make a profit.

There are some youtubers on here who complain they get a couple of pennies per 1000 views. Some videos have upwards of 6million views. Even if youtube pays 10p per 1000 views or 1p per 1000 views and you get 6 million views = profit.

Hell I even remember a story about an Eastern European brothel, it was completely free to punters, except every session was streamed to internet voyeurs and they made piles of money.

No one was complaining, we were just having a conversation about youtube monetisation. There are threads on here where some members of this forum just assume that anyone with a youtube account is either raking it in with ad revenue or is trying to rake it in with ad revenue when in actual fact the youtuber in question is not making much at all, if anything and is just making videos for fun.

"Youtubing" is a legitimate way to earn a living these days but you still have to treat it like a full time job if you are in any way serious about it. Ad revenue is just one small consideration when it comes to monetising a youtube account. R1 Jay went into detail in the thread I linked to above, it's quite interesting I think.

There's a whole industry built around watching other people play games like this. Amazon just bought Twitch for $1billion - sure they're after the users but there's a lot of them

I don't understand the fun of it either , but there's clearly a market for it.

Because someone thought that calling in a SWAT-mobilising hoax was funny.

This is how far humour has fallen.

As far as I see it, if they have turned on monetisation then they are trying to earn revenue, and the videos should be treated and viewed as such. If it was just for fun then they wouldn't turn monetisation on.

There's a guy I watch "Barnacules Nerdgasm" he did loads of very high quality videos about nerdy stuff, and never once was ad revenue turned on, over 100k subscribers and no revenue, as he was doing it for fun.

However, he got made redundant from his job at Microsoft, and has now turned it on, and I assume will be getting a fair chunk of money.

The point is that for those youtubers who really are just doing it for fun have no monetisation turned on, those who turn it on are trying to pull ad revenue.

I dunno, no matter how much you earn a little bit extra is always a nice thing.

Yes, but the channel should be viewed as a commercial interest, and I judge it's quality on that merit too.

If you monentise it, then doing it for fun is not a justification for a shit video.

That article is a fake, the site it's from is nominally a satire site, although it's had allthe humour removed.

I quite like nationalreport, the satire is subtle enough to perform excellently as a liberal-tears extraction device.

I find that usually if you have proper knowledge of the topic (whatever that happens to be) you can spot the little clues that something is off; yet it reads seriously enough that the layman will go along with it. I find peoples reactions to it, more so that the actual content on the site, more entertaining than onion and dailymash etc etc

It's actually a spectator sport now. One of my friends is one of the top casters from the UK for DOTA 2. He recently went to Germany where they sold enough tickets to hold the gaming event in Frankfurt's football stadium Shocked

Sorry but most people who say shit like this don't have a clue.

It's like DJs who play because of the passion of doing it but when you can turn a hobby/passion in to a paid profession, you're not going to say no because of your personal morals.

Who the hell doesn't want to get paid for something they consider a hobby/fun?

Unless you're already rich Phil?

There are a million shades of grey here for sure and it's not just a case of black and white as you've laid out above. I make videos for fun, don't get paid for them but do have my youtube account monetised. I'm not trying to pull in loads of ad revenue but:

This ^

I used to play bass guitar in a few bands. We'd often play for free just because we liked playing. We never intended to get signed to a record label or become rock stars or anything like that, we just wanted to party with our mates. When someone offered us a paying gig we definitely took it though as it was a nice bonus.

I still haven't been paid any money from youtube and doubt that I will for some time but if I somehow manage to make a video that gets loads of hits I'll definitely be glad I monetised my account. I'm not chasing that though and know full well that the chances of getting a viral video are very slim. Either way, I'll be glad of what little money I do eventually get from youtube ad revenue but it's not my main source of income, just something for fun on the side.
