Does anyone else try door handles straight after locking the door despite knowing full well that the door is locked?

Do it on car doors as well as house doors.

Please tell me it's not just me.

I nearly caused a stroke when I asked my Dad how he knows his car doors are locked. It's one of those ones where the doors unlock when you try to open them with the key in your pocket.

The only way to be sure is to walk away from the car, lock it remotely, put the key down, then walk back to it and try the door.

Yes, and checking the car was locked is exactly how I discovered that the boot wasn't locking on my old Clio. Now that I've had that paranoid behaviour "reinforced" with a successful result in discovering it wasn't locked when it should have been, I doubt I'll ever be able to stop

Yep, I do it on the front door of the house all the time. Takes merely a few seconds, peace of mind. Worth doing because it's easy to just let the latch lock the door rather than turning the key in the proper lock below, not something you want to miss when going out for hours.

I also test the steering lock after taking the key out of the bike. The one or two times I haven't done this I've left the key in and nearly walked away with it still in the ignition.

Some call it OCD, some call it being properly paranoid/sensible.

not so much with the car doors however despite the wife having a tendency to forget to lock it when dragging bags and baby from car to house.

always, takes a second and then you're sure it's locked, bit silly not to check really.

Even more so at my new flat where sometimes you have to turn the key twice for it to lock

Easier for me, my car doesn't lock (thanks, Citroen).

Bikes though, how many times do I need to go back and make absolutely sure that I've put the steering lock on and chained it properly and clicked the padlock closed?

I too always do it on my car.. Even though I know for a fact I've just locked it.

I think it's the way my brain is programmed. Sometimes I don't even want to check, my cars a POS. But I still check..

I used to suffer OCD, terribly.

But -- hallelujah! -- came the day when I finally washed my hands of it. And then I washed them again. Then again. And again. And again.

Our front door locks when it's shut.
Car doors locked, and OH will often ask me to check that he's locked them as I go past.

Go shopping, front door's locked, car door's locked.
Get back. Left the Kitchen windows wide open!
