I've always had breakdown cover as part of my insurance policy before, but it's looking like it'll be cheaper to arrange it separately this time.....any suggestions gratefully received! Looking for value primarily but don't wanna end up by the side of the road for 3 days waiting for a truck either!

I can't vouch for the quality but recently enquired with Swinton insurance about their breakdown cover. £5 a month with first 3 months free. Offers a get you home service and also covers accidents (which a few don't, so useful).

Thinking of taking it out for myself, my lad and daughter as can have 5 vehicles on one policy. First one was £5/month and then about £2.50/m a bike each after that (you'll need to check as think based on vehicle age).

If it's any help found the MoneySupermarket.com comparison quote page. The policies where you pay upfront and then reclaim it appear cheaper. Although I'm not sure if they'd be worth the hassle/quibbles.

Think/shop carefully
I had breakdown cover as part of my FootnMouth James
classic bike insurance
( who BTW can now go and F...... well, thats another rant)

It turned out to be Axa recovery using SOS bike recovery
and a bloody nightmare !
Long story short:
I was stuck for 6 hours in cold wet weather due to this long chain of command when a driver went awol
Axa to be fair, later apologised and gave me £40 compo
FJ and SOS weren't interested and full of shit.

Now I have AA recovery and must admit the only time I needed it
(for a car) they were pretty efficient

Have personally used SOS on multiple occasions and they have been very good and helpful. In fact, following my accident on Sunday, a SOS guy stopped to check everything was okay, and that I had cover.

I use GEM who then choose an operator to send out. Can rate both gem and SOS highly.

Do they have any limit on what vehicle it is? I can't find anything about it on the website, doesn't even say if it has to be your car etc.

SOS may well have many happy punters
but in my case, the chain of command going through Axa was a
royal fuckup.
The disinterested tarts at AXA were thick as shit and
SOS obviously didnt have anyone overseeing operations
so when their guy went awol, they had no contingency.
This made a mockery of all the 'we got lotsa techy/tracky stuff'
on the SOS website.
When eventually another company turned up with a ramp loader
for cars and dropped my bike trying to load it, I was past caring.

Not sure about vans, trucks etc and possibly don't cover sub 125cc motorcycles, the docs were apparently a bit ambiguous but none of those categories concern me.

Cars and larger bikes are covered for me and my spouse. Doesn't have to be my vehicle, just need to be driving it.

Recover after accidents too, unlike AA etc.

EDIT: Policy documents are on autoaid website, more detail in there:

https://www.autoaidbreakdown.co.uk/documents/AutoAid-Full-Policy.pdf

Cars, >150cc motorcycles and small motorhomes are covered.

I used autoaid a few times. Very good although you do normally have to pay there and then butif you don't have the means to pay they will let you pay next day. Always then got my money back within a week.
Very good at £38 a year
