Hi all

I have purchased a new (used) rear wheel for my R6. I have checked it is 100% straight and it looks like the original paint, has a few light marks as you would expect for the age.

I have noticed one of the spokes has a weird yellow/clear glue like substance, almost like hot glue or flux (resin?).

Is this for balancing or have I bought some dodgy wheel because it was not cheap Sad.

Do you think I should take it to a Yamaha dealership?
I have attached a few photos.

Thanks

Laurence

That, my friend, is a poorly resprayed rim!

The first photo shows where the chap couldn't be bothered to fill/fair an area of peeling paint prior to popping on a base coat.

The other two show excess lacquer, which has not been sanded/polished off prior to being declared 'job jobbed'!!!

Thanks so much that is extremely helpful as I have no knowledge in the area of painting / welding etc.

Would you say the wheel is safe or would it need an inspection to be sure.

I purchased it to replace a slightly bent wheel thinking it'd be the safer and better option...

What does welding flux look like?

Not like that!!! (although I think you have got soldering and welding mixed up as you wouldn't use a separate flux when welding.

Somebody has taken a rim with peeling/shabby paint, (hopefully) given it a key - ie sanded it - then applied a black base coat - the actual paint - and then (poorly) applied a lacquer coat which has run into the bottom most part of the spoke when it was hung up for painting. Ordinarily then any nibs like that would be sanded out and the whole lot polished - which is a ballache to do on spoked rims so most painters try to make a clean job of the lacquer the first time round by avoiding runs and then just hand waxing the article.

It would be fairly easy for a competent hand to sand that off with a fine grit paper and to then wax up as you would normally when cleaning your bike (although it does look like there is also an issue with missing base coat around those runs - or should the alloy be showing?

Edit: upon closer inspection it would appear that whoever did it has just painted the bit with the missing paint as I can see old failing paintwork around the area where the lacquer is - so they haven't painted or lacquered the whole rim (Muppets - IMHO Wink )

might be worth considering what I'm doing at the mo and getting it sand blasted clean and then powder coated.

to do so you'll need to strip the wheel of everything, bearings, the lot and find somewhere that specialises in wheels (not strictly necessary but they're more likely to mask off the surfaces for bearings and disks etc.

To answer your main question, it's a blob of clear-coat / paint from when the wheel has been badly re-sprayed and shouldn't affect the wheel's use.

Reasons it's been painted could be;

1) original paint getting tatty / damaged and so sorting it out to look nicer
2) original paint got replaced by someone painting wheel to match bike, now being painted back / wheel replacement from another bike and painted to match

3) painted to hide damage

most likely the first two as alloy wheels don't tend to bend, they tend to crack and you'd be able to tell.

Thanks you have some talent telling all that from these photos! Told you I had no clue about welding haha!

Actually my current one is bent slightly no cracks at all and this is the reason I purchased this one! I did not want to mess around with buying another set of bearings for powder coating etc and having to chance a repair.

The paint I am pretty much 100% certain is the original around the rim outside as there is a yellow pinstripe on the R46 wheel which is painted and hard to replicate in the exact manor that it is done there are a few paint blemishes and manufacturing lines etc which match my original wheel 100%.

Looks like it was painted around the spokes and centre area I just hope not to cover any damage. Either way it's not "paint in very condition" which it was described as....
