As the title says...

The bikes been sitting in the garage for over a year waiting for me to pull my finger out and get the CBT done, now needs a service.

Where is a good place to buy the parts? Online or highstreet (although I don't know of any bike shops nearby).

For car stuff I'd use Euro Car Parts, but their motorbike range is disappointingly limited Wink Just don't want to get bummed by a halfords type outfit.

Air + oil filter / spark plug / brake fluid / oil... that's probably it.... well, maybe a new battery, need to test this one.

cheers

Cheers Mr Borg, always a bit concerned about buying parts on eBay, probably end up with something made out of old kit-kat wrappers, but will try the site Wink

Speaking from experience - you would be wise to be cautious of Ebay, its mostly cheap shit - go Wemoto for decent parts + usually quick delivery too.

Wemoto for me too, though sometimes (especially for a single part) it can be cheaper to ebay from a well known seller as you can save on shipping - e.g. I bought some rear pads from Demon Tweeks' ebay store this week saving about a fiver over buying just the pads from Wemoto (exact brand/type). If I'd been buying a complete service kit (all filters etc.) then it'd have been cheaper from Wemoto.

Cheers guys. Ideally I'd like to pick these things up from a local independent shop, buuuuuut they don't seem to exist (at least, I don't know any), so wemoto it shall be.

I'll have a chat to my local 'friendly' suzuki dealer tomorrow, just to be able to compare prices.

I say friendly, a more accurate description would be 'feckless', but at least they have access to a parts list and model numbers.

I buy almost everything for cars and bikes on eBay, mainly from a small list of sellers that I do regular business with.

Try searching for your make and model on eBay, then use the 'Distance: nearest first' option to try and find local sellers that list stuff for your bike. Speak to them and see if you can do a 'collect and pay cash' deal , so if you are presented with crap, you can walk away.

I have found several car and bike parts sellers local to me, that I never would have found otherwise.

Ebay is okay as long as you buy branded parts off decent sellers and don't purchase the cheap crap that is on there.

Small independent bike shops don't exist anymore in great numbers mainly because of the likes of ebay and the internet in general.

Also bear in mind that just because your bike has sat there unused for a year doesn't automatically mean it now needs a service, but if you want to do it, do it anyway.

Only if you don't know what you're doing. I've managed to get loads of parts for both my GS and my VFR from ebay without a single problem. Wemoto have, on the other hand, supplied very cheap/inferior (and in one or two cases, just plain wrong) parts before now.

I sell on eBay, so I'm obviously not tarring all sellers with the same brush, but there are a lot of dodgy listings out there that 'look' legit.

I like the idea of searching by distance, I imagine there will be some independent shops listing on there that I can pop down to, we'll see.

Wemoto are brilliant. Fast delivery, good selection of parts, well priced, only once had a problem with them and that was just things getting over looked, as soon as I raised the issue with them they were straight on it and actually sent me a higher quality product than I had ordered because the original ordered part was out of stock.

+1

Both in their retail section & their trade parts supply.

Freindly guys to talk to, always happy to fix a cock up even if it means putting themselves out of pocket Thumbs Up

They do however, sell some pretty naff stuff. Like those Swift chains.

If the OP put his location on his profile, someone might be able to tell him where there are any independent shops near him?

I've had soem good service form the big ebay seller in Wales - I think one is called 'Scooters and Bikes' and the other 'M&P'.

Quality seems fair for pattern parts, but I do low mileage so longevity might come into question at some point..
