I've not been employed directly by them but I've done shifts on the agency services mechanic thing.

The getting a job with them is very technically based, finding a fault and fixing it isn't enough, telling how many ohms an ignition module should be showing on an avo meter is what they want.

I assume you've done rescue/recovery before?
Private garages will usually have a controller who doesn't know the difference between a spec and a slide bed and chase you every 5 mins for a completion code and to give you the next job, aa control wait until they hear from you and don't send service vans to look at burnt out cars.

Its a good job, you are front line, all jobs will be fresh, all the 3 hr delay stuff is garaged(contracted) so won't get much of the why have I been waiting 3hrs? from members.

You will need to be well versed in how to sell a battery.

Hi

A friend was a AA bod for quite a few years. His comment was that when he started it was great, and they gave him a lot of freedom to sort thing out. By the time he left it was all target driven to get things passed on as quickly as possible, not caring if the vehicle could be fixed with a little effort.

I went for an interview with the RAC a few years ago. Technical skills they were not really interested in beyond the basics, as their view was they could easily teach these. The main thing they wanted was people with the people skills to deal with stressed customers. They were also very keen on never blaming the RAC for any lateness in getting to a customer.

All the best

Keith

Pity they don't put a bit more emphasis on that part of the job, in the last 2 1/2 years, I haven't had a single vehicle dragged in by the AA that's had the correct diagnosis.

Latest is a Transit that came in on Monday, that's apparently a non starter because of a faulty sensor, shame he missed the snapped cam chain that means it's got no compression Rolling Eyes

My combo broke, diagnosed as fuel pump. I was sure it was the chain.

I had no tools. On arrival at mates garage, i took a couple of bolts out, spun it over to see no cam spinning.
Next stop ebay.

I had a fiesta job to recover from the underground section of a multi story car park, keys had been stolen.

I got in, took a lock out, decoded and rang a 24hr locksmith with the key code who turned up 30 mins later with a pair of keys and they drove home.

I got a massive bollocking for not doing the job requested, even though the members were well happy. Rolling Eyes
