So I'm eying up this sexyness... https://www.newcastlemotorcycles.co.uk/pages/used/used-bikes/2010-10-YAMAHA-XT125R-125cc/9541.htm

First off I'm aware you pay over the odds at a dealer, I'm also aware that you would also lose a large portion part exchanging a bike too.

My Question being, has anyone here bought a dealer bike and px at the same time? what was your experience of it all?
How much do you think you lost over going private on both counts?

Yes. I bought a used bike from a dealer. Both your points are accurate. I paid more for the bike than I should have, and got less that I should have for my old bike from them too. The only plus point is that it's convenient.

Would not recommend.

I`ve mostly bought from dealers.. and from this dealer too.. I suspect you talked to Graham.. he runs the place ... there wont be a lot of profit in a small bike .. £600 is likely on this specific bike... if you go in wit no part-ex I would be lookin for £200 off the price...
if you do part ex he wont shift on the askin price but may up the value of your trade in .. be prepared to walk away and remember 125`s don`t sell that well these days, people tend to use training schools... what is it you got to trade in ?

IMHO buying from a dealer:

PROS
- convenience (you see bike whenever you want)
- less problems to get money back or get the bike repaired if i.e. there is something wrong with the bike (legally/financially/mechanically)
- finance available if you need it

CONS
- one and major one - much higher price for the same age/model/mileage

If you decide to trade old bike and get new used one from a dealer then you lose even more money. But then again it saves you all the hassle of selling privately.

Varies massively from dealer to dealer.

True.. I just tried to edit my post before somebody replied.

But in general buying privately means buying what you see and that's it.

A dealer provides a service..
If you decide to use it you will pay for it.

some providers are better than others.

this particular dealer is one of the better ones ...
It has to be said.. None are perfect.

On the bright side, I actually rate the guys at newcastle motorcycles very highly. Would prefer to give them my hard earned over the weasels at M&S.

The benefits are, it will have had its history checked, been properly serviced and cleaned. You're probably not paying much more for a good example of the bike than you'd find elsewhere. I wouldn't be put off.

That's a bold claim.

I'd typically expect to pay at least 500 more on a trade-in than selling and buying privately, even on the cheapest bikes.

Looking on eBay, prices on XT125Rs are all over the place. Same age, few more miles, 400 less.

The only way to find out what the price to exchange will be is to take your bike in and ask.

Why not stick your CG up on Gumtree and see if you get any interest? Perhaps the dealer will accept Staffy puppies.

I've known people to use Newcastle Motorcycles regularly and they are by far the best dealers you can go to in the North East imo. Fantastic service, They have a great showroom and they are just genuinely nice people! If it wasn't for the dealer prices i would have use them for every bike i'd buy Thumbs Up

I've bought dealer bikes and part exchanged at the same time, but really can't remember the figures as it's been a while. Recently I was offered £800 for the Savage by a dealer, privately I think it'll go for £1000, or maybe £1200 if someone really wanted one. Seems to tie in with the roughly 2/3rds of the value offered I think I remember.

Just pointing that out as worth checking.

I don't think that model would have had ABS.

If being the operative word. Not a sniff of interest in my GS, even though I'm asking less than I've just been offered for it as a trade-in.

Sadly, that was against a hypothetical MT-07 which - no doubt thanks to Paddy's constant praise - can't be had for love nor money anywhere.

Might have to settle for something chavvy like a Striple. Sad

This is why I love BCF, you could probably post about any bike shop in the UK and someone could provide first hand feedback on it Very Happy

I'll admit I am all about the convenience, I paid well over the odds for the CG.
Partly as it was a while ago and didn't know what to look for to drive the price down really, but a lot of it was that I wanted a bike there and then, and it was local.
(seriously, there doesn't seem to be a lot of 125s being sold within a 5-10 mile radius of me)

Maybe Gumtree, but I CBA dealing with more cunts than I already have to in life, I'm not smart with my money really, I prefer to have a happier or more peaceful life, even if I have to pay for it.
I'm now thinking buy dealership and break the CG for parts, should likely be the best balance to satisfy my complacency and not lose too much.

I was gonna go down today to check out and/or impulse buy the XT today (or maybe the YBR they're also selling if the XT didn't seem good)
Alas, I woke up to the radio telling me the Great North Run is on! Sod that.

What's with these people running long distances?? haven't they heard of motorcycles?! pfft.

Cheers for the offer, I've lived in Newcastle my entire life, but I'm ashamed to say I have zero sense of direction, where is "over the hill"? Smile

Ahh gotcha.
I shoulda known that, but don't know many bikers, least not ones who still ride anyway.
Bought a Few things from Custom Lids up that way tho.
Checked out the website for M&S on that street but they rarely have any 125s.

its rare to see a L plate at any bike meet 1 or 2 at Wildfowl or Zetlands peeps just don`t buy them any more... (I don`t count scooters)
in the late 80`s the car park would be full of them.
anyway I`m gonna have a look at that dealership as need to price a new back tire so will cast me eye over said 125s.. I`m curious now.

Aye I know I'm a rare case, for several reasons I will likely be on a 125 for at least another year or 2, I wouldn't say I really need a bigger bike, although I'd like one.
It takes me 10 minutes to get to work, and I rarely get above 30 (except the one time I do the Scamera gets me!)

Since I fixed the issues the previous owner left it with, my CG is actually now in perfect working order, but its old...
Drum brakes, no sidestand, no fuel gauge, no tacho, underpowered headlight.

Time for an upgrade Very Happy

M&s usually have one or two 125s in my experience. But if not you can usually find them at a few of the other smaller dealers on the hill.
