So, like many before me and many after me, I passed mod 1 (zero faults, a clean sheet) and Mod 2 today (2 minor faults). Very Happy

L Plates have already been taken off the varadero and I'm now planning some test rides next week/this weekend if it's not pishing it down all weekend. Laughing

Got a few bikes on my list to test ride/look at/sit on/stroke/finger. These being:

F800ST/S
FZ6 Fazer
CB/CBF500
Hornet
CBR600F (2001 onwards, with FI)
SV650
Thundercat

BMW F650CS - there's one at a local dealer, £1700, factory heated grips, ABS, FI, Belt drive... they're weird as hell looking but god damnit I'm tempted to take a proper look, strange single that they are Laughing

And the Street triple, Aprilia Shiver (ducati hyper motard, 696/796, aprilia dorsoduro, KTM 950SM) but these are more for when I can get a nicer bike next spring, need something relatively cheap and winterproof at the moment (sub £2k and capable of doing 200 miles a week in all weathers). I paid £1700 for the vara so would love to do a straight swap at a dealer.

Nice one! Thumbs Up

A world of possibilities awaits. I'm also intrigued by the CS, although do run it at speed so see how vibey it is.

Yeah I'll give it a spin, will definitely take it on the motorway to see how vibey it gets. Only thing is I might need to wear a paper bag over my head, it's not exactly a beautiful bike is it Laughing

Congrats. Thumbs Up

For the bike, what purpose will it serve - commuting or just for fun - or both?

Budget?

Then I will proceed to post pics of my hornet.

Thumbs Up

At the moment - a 200 mile a week/40 mile a day commute, through winter, in all weathers.

+

Fun rides out, and general use (don't have a car) - most likely by the time next summer hits I'll have either got something nicer or got a 2nd bike. I can see myself booking a few days off and disappearing up to scotland/wales/france/beyond for a few days with a tent/couple of B&B's booked, but I'll probably have a different bike by this time.

Budget at the moment is as little as possible! My vara is worth around £1700 privately, would love to be able to walk into a dealer and part ex it with a hundred quid either way. Most of my free money will be going towards deposit and 1st months rent for a house for the next month or 3.

Oh right, in that case I won't say get a hornet then Laughing

Thundercat sounds a good option, can be had relatively cheap.

Infact most on that list will be fine, especially if you are looking to get another next summer. Thumbs Up

Personally I like a full fairing for the winter because it gives a bit more protection.

CBR600F fits the bill but if you want to spend under 2k you might find it hard to get an FI one.

Yeah fuel range is a biggie at the moment, my vara does 280 miles on a single tank so I don't know how I'd cope going down to a 120 mile range Laughing

I'm looking for a place closer to work so will hopefully be down to doing under 20 miles a day, ideally 5-10 miles a day, which then opens up a whole other world of bikes.

I'm in no rush for a new bike tbh, I may even run the varadero through winter, or at least until I get a new place. Should have a garage too at the new house.

I could pick up a cheap cb500/thundercat for about a grand privately, but I don't have space for 2 bikes, and then there's the hassle of selling the vara in autumn/winter, and it's due an MOT in January.

Yeah, FI would be high on my list - carbs and a choke are ok but on a cold january morning when it's 1 degree outside I know I'd be wishing I had FI.

Fairing - for the weather protection - definitely a plus, but I'm not doing many motorway high speed miles (A road and town riding mostly), and on my DAS I got less wind noise on my helmet on the ER6N than I do my on varadero wi it's small screen. So it's need to be either a full hieght screen or a naked.

So looks like my budget is going up a little, due to the fact that I need to part-ex my varadero - don't have room for 2 bikes and I'd need to sell the vara pretty much right away after replacing it - and very few dealers have stock of bikes under £2k. Should only lose a couple of hundred quid of trade in (paid £1700) so now looking at around £2500 give or take a few hundred for haggle room. Very Happy

This now opens up a fair few more bikes, everything from a 650 V-Strom (nice, comfy, big, but I don't think the style of bike I'm after) to an Aprilia Shiver (just in budget, sort of! Shifty ) which is much, much more like it Very Happy

Shame VFR's are nearly a grand insurance as there's plenty of these about at that price.

A grand insurance? Where did you get your quotes from? Should it be that high? Mind me asking how old you are?

Thundercats are fairly decent, some prefer the CBR600F, I didn't.

If you buy one, make sure its got stainless headers.

For the trip you suggest, 200 miles a week, a triple would cost you £30 in fuel. Not bad given that you can have a laugh with it!

However, depends on what else you want it for, any bike can do commuting really, but if you want to have fun at the weekends or try a trackday, the triple or sporty-ish 600 is the way to go.

I was also intrigued by the F650CS, having owned a Vara during my CBT stint, saw a couple with plenty of factory toys at decent prices but upon closer inspection I decided it was too cosmetically challenged for me.

I went onto looking at a CBR600F and 2006 Fazer FZ6,
loved the CBR but wasn't able to find a tidy FI for the budget I had in mind, ended up with a 55 Reg FZ6.

So far it has been a good all rounder, gearbox could be a touch smoother though

Just under £900 with a £500 excess, that's for fully comp - I'm 33, 0 NCD, driveway, 10k miles pa, just passed test, clean licence/no accidents.

Compare that for a VFR 800 (VTEC) to an Aprilia SHiver 750, same value, same everything else which is £450 fully comp.

And a Suziku 650 V-Strom is £320 fully comp, as is the F650CS.

Even a Street triple/CBR600F comes out at around £500, and a CB1000R is less to insure than a VFR Laughing

Ah well those prices sound about right, I'm 31 and they sound similar to quotes I've had. Very strange with the VFR though, I think some insurance companies are scared of anything VTEC lol.
