I have been working in IT for around 18 months now for a telecoms company, although we work mainly in phones and internet I would describe my job as all round networking.

Before I started my job here I didn't have any IT experience, so have basically learnt while doing, which is fine as I have learnt fast through the need to.
Although I generally know what I am doing and am very confident with the products we sell and support I would like some sort of formal qualification. Not only to have something to my name, but also I don't feel confident speaking to other IT professionals, as I am not comfortable that what I am saying is fact.

So what qualifications do you guys have (if any), and are they worth doing in general? Recommendations for any that are regarded well by future employers if the need arises?

Also, do not acquire a whole pile of crappy old kit to play with, you can now build any network topology you require to test with inside of a virtual environment, using either GNS3, Cisco Cloud Services Router if you work in an environment utilising IOS XE, or boot versions of the Nexus 1000v to use NX-OS

On the back of that, just seen req's for large(ish) lab setup.

To build your virtual ccie rack you will need:

1 x server or high power desktop with at least 16GB ram for 10 routers and 32GB ram for 20 routers
1 x Cisco CSR1000v
1 x VMWare ESXi 5.1

Snap dawg, I only have 8GB RAM

I'm gonna dig through the rents loft to find CCNA stuff when I get some time. Some is a little outdated, fair bit of IOS stuff in there, notes n all, sure I have a disk somewhere with example test stuff too..

That's a lot easier than the old CCIE lab which was 6 2800 series routers, 4 3560 switches, a frame relay switch and a few misc bits and bobs. About 3 or 4 grand if you hunted on ebay for old stuff, vs a couple of hundred quid for ram now.

I suspect that with 20 routers a few more real world WAN designs can be created, rather than just running all the features you could possible manage on a couple of routers because exam

On a side note, the CSR looks really interesting. I'm hoping that it can mean I can ditch a load of expensive tin cluttering up computer rooms in the next couple of years.

The last 12 months has seen the first time there has been less hardware and wires in a computer room compared to the year before, following years and years of bigger and bigger piles of networking crap all spinning and using power
