Went past the scene of a collision on my way to work yesterday. There was still debris in the road and despite efforts to give it a wide berth, when I got home again I dug this out of my rear tyre;

It had been stuck in there for 50miles or so but it wasn't stuck in all the way or flush with the tyre by any means, just kinda sticking out, so I took it out when I noticed it.

The damage it left behind appears relatively small, I would say the thing was stuck in probably only a few mm, but it is in an unfortunate place.

So - should I be worried? I have a tyre pressure guage which I will use to check it before I use it next (Monday morning) so if the pressures are ok does that mean I'm safe?
Sorry for noob question but, well, I am a noob!

Tyre is relatively new so don't especially want to replace it.

I always thought that if you pulled something out of a tyre and it didn't go down then it's fine as it hasn't penetrated the carcass. Though saying that I've only ever done it on car tyres so not quite as critical.

Thumbs Up

Put some washing up liquid in some water and pour it over the cut, if you get bubbles then get the tyre repaired

If it isn't losing air don't worry about it. You cant repair a puncture that has actually punctured the tyre.

I would be extremely cautious, but that's just me Rolling Eyes
Personally, I would check the tyre regularly to be sure no damage has been caused.
Judging by the fact you rode it home and the shrapnel was still sticking out, It would suggest that the strength of the tyre stopped it piecing further and causing damage Thumbs Up

I'd just bung some adhesive in there so as to prevent further crap going in.

I'd just ride it. No air lost, no problem.

I'd ride it too, but sometimes with damage like that it only becomes a problem when the tyre is under stress e.g. hit a big pothole/speed hump, pressure in the tyre rises, fails.

£100 though for a new one, when there's tread left and it's holding air? I'd take my chances.

Stick a screwdriver in it and carefully prise the cut open. Can you see the cords?

No? Then it'll be fine, don't worry about it.

Yes? Then its now illegal - replace it.

I bet its a no...

If it was on my car, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

On a bike, personally it's just not a risk I'd take and since you're unsure enough to be asking for an opinion I'm not going to be one that tells you you're going to be fine.

It's gutting when something like this happens on a new / nearly new tyre and I do feel your pain but if you've even got the slightest bit of doubt in your own mind it's much better to bite the bullet and stump for a new tyre even if it's just for peace of mind - there's enough to worry about on the road without being conscious you may get a blow out at some point!

Trace accident, demand person at fault replace tyre?

I have no idea if that will work, but for great justice and all that.

Sounds like a cock move. If someone hit you, then another random was trying to claim you'd damaged their tyre, what would you think?

(Also you'd never get it stand up in court).

Pressure gauge and water trick suggest no appreciable amount of air is being lost.

None the less it seems some people would still be worried about the damage to the rubber so i think I will take this as an opportunity to upgrade the Dunlop Sportmax that Honda decided to put on there.

Thanks for the input everyone.
