Hi there. I'm having a little problem with my 95 Bandit.
Few days ago my headlights started playing up, one day they work, next day they don't. Now it got to a point where only one of the twin headlights is working and it only works on dipped beam, no main beam or high beam what so ever. The fuse was shattered and the charging from alternator is showing 18 volts! My dad says he's suprised the battery didn't blow up into my arse... He thinks it might be the rectifier?? I am absolutely clueless.

Any help would be greatly appreciated Karma . Thank you.

18 volts is enough to kill most batteries, so fit a new reg/rec and get the battery checked.

If you just fit a new reg/rec, the chances are it won't charge the battery because the battery is damaged inside - and you will be going round in circles.

For peace of mind, consider fitting one of these - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200537742926?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2648&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I'd be replacing the reg/rec and battery in this case, though, rather than a led for £15, you can get a voltage display for 99p that works a treat!

Derp, replace the reg/rec and install as J.M. said, a £1 voltage display... be silly not to.

I prefer the Gammatronix ones, as they are waterproof and only need a small hole to install. You can fit them almost anywhere - plus, they can be left connected all the time without draining the battery. When the engine is off, they flash to emulate an alarm.

This one only needs a 6.5mm hole.

Or you wire a push to make switch or relay.

How does it know what is good. I might say its good at a completely unused state, so off with ign on, but when you hit the starter you can see exactly what is going on, what the V drops to.

Its far more usable than a light.

Just personal preference I suppose - the LED changes colour and flashes to indicate voltages from below 10.7 to above 15.2 and gives advanced warning of what is going on at all times - like if it shows anything other than steady green, it's easy to spot out of the corner of your eye

If I think there's a problem, that's the time to get the multimeter and oscilloscope out - just a voltmeter won't show exactly what or where the problem is anyway.

If my display says 15v and up, I know reg rec has gone.

If its showing under 13, I know to check connections to reg rec and output of stator.

It rules out issues, the only voltages I'd want to know on bike are near 13V +/- 1V either side.

I don't want it to flash, I want it to tell me what the voltage is. I rarely notice my fuel low light. I'd rather know the acid filled lump between my legs is about to go bang.

When I last replaced a reg/rec, it cost me around £20. Just get a used one.

Go to your local breakers, ask for a reg/rec. Pretty much anything a similar size to yours will do the job. As a personal preference, I like the ones with wires coming out of the reg/rec and connector blocks on the wires, rather than pins that come out of the reg/rec and a block that plugs in.

Pretty much any will fit happily. Many people use R1 MOSFET ones to replace their Honda units.

@Sam, yes. I wired mine up through a relay though as a ran power cables to the front of my bike for accessories anyway.

@DK, I haven't seen that and I'm not on my laptop to look it up, but if you have 3 wires coming from your stator, you could put on whatever you like with enough modifications. I would have no personal issues against hacking a cheap bike back together if the correct parts are disproportionally priced!
