Watching an episode of Emergency Bikers online while eating my tea, and just got to this clip (at 13:00 in the show) https://www.channel5.com/shows/emergency-bikers/episodes/episode-4-556

Basic summary:

An unmarked police biker is hiding in bushes just past a roundabout. In the clip, the unmarked police biker sets off because he hears a motorbike revving hard, but he never actually sees the bike, he bases it purely on the noise from the high revving engine to determine he might be speeding. He spanks it down the road, then pulls over the first motorbike he sees and cautions them on the spot (but never witnesses the biker breaking the speed limit). He says he has to go 145 to catch up to the biker, and uses that to browbeat the biker into doing a speed awareness course.

But surely he has no proof the biker he pulled over is the same one he thinks he heard riding when he set off, since he never actually saw what bike he was setting off to chase at the roundabout? Couldn't the victim argue in court that the police officer pulled him over mistakenly, and that it must have been another biker he heard?

That's why the copper went for the speed awareness course, a speeding ticket would be far more likely to go to court and such non existent evidence would be laughed at by the magistrates, especially if the video didn't get lost and they got to see it... What if it had been a 250 il4? 18k+ rpm at legal speeds.

Surprised he didn't get slapped with a S59, they're total bullshit, they use it when they've decided they're giving you something but have no proof of anything.

I used to have to pin the throttle on my 125 to get anywhere. 15mph red line in first gear combined with an MOT-failingly loud exhaust would have had this effect.

I still have that exhaust somewhere... Need to get rid!

"The bikes got video on it", I would be asking to see the video evidence of me speeding and the calibration certificate for his hearing.

Actually having said that I would probably have been brow-beaten into doing a speed awareness course and then made a complaint against the officer. I have a tracker on my bike that states my speed on any given road which would have been laughed off and ignored.

The biker (Rossi?) new full well that the cop had nothing on him, he probably took the speed awareness course to get his prying eyes away from finding faults on his bike, he'll detest it when he gets home.

If I had the space on my licence I'd chance that in court I think.

It's not like the video shows him going past at 1XXMPH and then the copper gives chase, he hears something go past and then decides that it's ok for him to do 145mph and then happens across another motorcycle on the road which he pulls.

"I had to do 145 to catch up"

No you didnt, you had to do 0.0000000000000000000000001mph faster than he was in order to catch up. Rolling Eyes It just takes a touch longer. Middle Finger

I'd expect any traffic solicitor to drown that pretty sharp in court.

What I hate is the old favourite 'what I don't want to do is to have to see you again all splattered' type lines where he's effectively saying he's going to snuff it if he keeps riding quickly....

......after knowingly topping a ton forty down a bypass on an unmarked bike, presumably with no blues showing, past cars at speed, and then chucking it in on the roundabout with the revs up high - all to catch a guy up and give him a £100 speed awareness course that'll make f all difference in the real world.

It's just so hypocritical. If he was bothered about safety he'd be out on the main road, parked in plain sight, on a marked bike - not hiding in the lay-by waiting for someone to go by at speed and allow them to continue on for 3-4 miles at that speed anyway.

It smacks of 'I'm a trained operative of a motorcycle and you're a pleb'. So he can do triple figures and half way again to the magic 200 but the ordinary bloke can't - even though he has no idea whether the ordinary bloke has better bike control than Marquez

Now correct me if I'm wrong. But the speeding sound he heard sounded like a Inline 4 at high revs. Now I'm sure its a Aprilia RSV4 he's pulled over. And they sound nothing like the noise i heard. Confused

Couldn't really tell from the video but those RSV4's do rev quite high and sound a bit screamy like an inline4.

If the police rider training is so amazing that it's perfectly safe for them to ride flat out for miles just to lecture people on minor offences, then why don't they just let everybody have the training and be able to do the same.
I'm guessing that if somebody changed lane right in front of him going 70-80mph slower, the end result is going to be the same as if it was one of us mere mortals and not a super duper police bike man.

The irrelevance is irrelevant. He stands just as much chance as the next bod of avoiding an accident / surviving. The point is why not just leave it at that as far as the point is concerned. Q- were you speeding? A-Yes. Right then, strict liability offence and here's a ticket.

Cut the bullshit about road safety, cut the hypocrisy of him being able to do twice the speed limit in pursuit of a 'valid cause' 'cos training innit' and just do what all the other coppers do and set up a speed trap 1/3rd of the way up off the roundabout - by the time the biker had seen it, it'd be too late anyway and 'justice' would have got the same result.

That police officer was on thin ice there, how could he possibly know the bike he allegedly heard speeding was the one he pulled over?

He couldn't possibly know, but he could possibly assume and then threaten the rider with the fact if he tells the magistrates 'the facts' then they'll take his word for it.

Unfortunately, such is the way with a lot of other offences too.

Ah the good old A131, always a favourite for unmarked police bikes and always plenty of bikers chancing it up and down there anyway.

A series of well surfaced, fairly large roundabouts and some nice stretches of dual carriageway between them do make it very tempting, although most locals now realise it's a poor place to play...

All of that said, I learned to get my knee down on that road, also had my first off, and have filmed/been filmed in multiple ridiculous and probably highly incriminating night time fly-by videos along there.

You don't have to watch a police program long before you spot them making mistakes and poor judgments. It makes you wonder what they're like when they are NOT on their best behaviour for the camera crew.

imagine a tv show using a pre recorded sound to jazz up a really dull bit.
making out that 130mph to catch someone is really fast.
truth is copper saw rsv4 flash past and then went for it.
sounds added later for dramatic effect as they didnt have the recorders going when he went past.
tv shows arent real life!
you cant edit real life.

if a dual cabbagway is where you ride you need to stop and look at yourself.

Well I spend a bunch of time there because one of my best mates lives just off it, and it's by far the easiest way to get to his house. And the easiest place for a late night test-run of any new bits.

There are some awesome stretches of B road not a million miles from there, which is where I would tend to play, but there is something very tempting about that stretch when you happen to be on it. I think it must be to do with the fact you can come off the roundabouts just coming into the power in second gear on most (all of the ones I've ridden along there) superbikes, and it's very easy just to wind out a few gears to the next one.

Arry's right though, the alps it ain't around here.

An apparently busy biker road on a weekend and he hears but doesn't see a screaming bike going past... probably an IL4.

He only gets sight of a bike after several miles at nearly 140mph (which seems quite slow for "flat out" - I'm not certain what bike he's on but I thought it was a K1300S, and they're a 170mph bike).

I doubt the biker was completely innocent, but there was no apparent evidence other than the admission to speeding. However it wouldnt surprise me if magistrates see that video, 138mph speed overlay and thing biker, speeding biker, oh won't somebody think of the kittens, and comes to the conclusion that prison food is a suitable punishment.

I know many bikers who do stuff on the road that I don't deem to be "so outrageous I would never do it" and to get away with only a fine and a speed awareness course would be thanking lucky stars.

Unless you're lucky and get someone like my old physics teacher who was also a magistrate (handy for getting passport application signed).

At least he'd realise physics don't work like that and would really dress down anyone who tried to tell him different ("Ye cannae change the laws o'physics" as Scotty would say).
