I've been looking at swapping in the ZX9 for something a little newer (and quicker).

The ZZ1400 seems to be a good option as i'm looking for something comfy for my commute yet can be fun in the twisties at the same time. I prefer the aesthetics of the bike over the Hayabusa.

My only concern is of it's size. The concern is with how it will fit into my mancave and be when wheeling around the garden and drive. When it's out on the road, i'm sure it is nimble enough.

How are they to live with? costs high or about the same as a litre bike?

Any good resources to start researching? Anything to look out for when buying?

Thanks J.

I don't think you'll have much issue if your 9r is fine, I can't think of anything that would make me worry about manoeuvrability that much, until you start looking at the likes of the RT's or 'wings.

Good to hear about the parts and maneuverability being reasonable too. I believe they began production in 2006, are there any real model years to avoid? The wikipedia page mentions a slight update year on year to them but nothing glaringly obvious.

My budget would likely be in the 6-7k region for the bike. Unsure what the mileage vs age tipping point is. There are a fair few young bikes with higher miles around.

When I had a quick go on one it felt as light as a 600. Was really surprised.

Nice bikes if you can live with the styling (I know, it's all personal choice but I don't like the modern ones)

I would rather have the Kwak GT1400. Shaft drive and panniers already there Thumbs Up

Aim for the ones used by older guys that had to have the biggest & best for bragging rights. I know someone with one who took it past 90mph only once or twice & just went touring on it. They like to spend lots of money on maintaining it, and due to having never been spanked everythings in good condition.

Whistle

ref:- the ABS.. not much mention of units failing on forums.. not to say they don`t ... but its not common at all.. there are braded hose kits to do away with the ABS.. never felt mine activate yet anyway..have heard about the rear brake fluid though.. must remember to bleed mine.... Thumbs Up

Really? Interesting. You felt it was very heavy whilst riding it then?

not once moving if you know what I mean ... but any maneuver requires a certain amount of .. well deliberateness .. thought and consideration.. I know what the 5VY is gonna do before it does ..but the ZZR14 requires a firmer hand.. tight twisties tryin to keep up wit 2 x xtz660 around Stanhope / Alston was fookin hard work.
I don`t even bother takin it out wit them anymore.... R1 copes much better even 796 .
where it shines is roads like Fort William to Broadford .. Thumbs Up

shredded the back tyre 3k from a bt-016 .. Pale

Seems like the sweet spot may be something 2008 - 2010. I actually really like the styling (but then I also had a bug-eye Subaru Impreza too!)

I'll bear the ABS point in mind, £1300 is a bit sore for a pump.

Never, ever heard of an ABS pump going and I have had two ZZR1400s.

Economical - you will get close to 200 miles per tank that is 40 plus mpg.

In the twisties forward thinking and good road positioning will allow you to match most competent sport bike riders. Hairpins are more difficult but not impossible. Once you move on to the constant radius bends and straight sections your mates on sport bikes will really struggle to keep up with a well ridden ZZR1400. Great brakes.

Fantastically easy motorcycle to ride and if you can master it - formidable In any company.

6 to 7k will get you an absolute mint last of the Gen1 bikes (2011). 8k will bag you a Gen2 bike with lots of detail improvements and even more power (does not really need it) and more sorted suspension.

PR3/PR4s/Road smarts will give 3500miles or more on the rear ridden in a spirited manner.

Luggage - Givi racks and top boxes (yuk I hate top boxes) are all available as is Ventura (my choice).

Disadvantages - power is addictive and you will arrive everywhere 20mph faster than you thought you were going!!

Servicing - oil change a doddle - spark plugs will go easily 12500 miles fiddly but not impossible - valve clearances at 24000 specialist.

Never once had a desire to own anything else - if I was to buy another bike it would be a Gen2 ZZR.

Wow, thanks for all of this information. It's great to get an insight from an owner. Thumbs Up
