HI all, I've been lurking for a while and passed my Mod2 last week.
I'd like to get a bike to get some miles under me over winter so I'm looking at the faired versions of the usual first big bikes: er6f, sv650s and Xj6 diversion (Used).
I've got a self imposed budget of £2.5k-£3k, any other recommendations?

take a look at the BMW F800ST/S, Yamaha FZ6 Fazer, CBR600F (the old 2001/2 model with FI) as well, should be some of these in your budget.

Are you gonna be using it for commuting? If so, how many miles? This will dictate what bike you get, a 200 mile a week commute will need a different bike to a 50 mile a week commute.

Great thanks, I'll take a look.

No commuting, it's purely for self indulgent fun. Smile

So why bother with a faired bike. Most offer next to no extra protection from the wet or cold. (unlike a car, the wind still get round the fairing Laughing )
Get a offroad bike and you have the option of good use even in snow....
Faired bike in winter = extra expense if dropped Thumbs Up

You do not need fairing then. Although all sports bikes have fairing and because they are sport bikes means more fun Smile The same is valid for sports touring ones like BMW F800S/ST.

The skills of 99% of the bikers I know are far away from most good bike's limit so any good bike will fit the bill. Like Triumph Speed Tripple.

I am pretty sure you can have a fun on any bike you get. Even on classic Triumph Boneville or say Moto Guzzi V7 Cafe Racer Smile

It depends on what kind of fun you want. High speed track fun - CBR1000RR. Or B roads twisty fun - KTM 690 Duke. Or offroad fun - some KTM 350.

Just test ride few and see what you like.

I've always had a hankering for an MT as a winter bike. With the gun carriers to add a little extra respect Wink

I'd say the Diversion is more fun than the Gladius, since I own the former and tried the latter. It's a nice mix of practical and fun, and an absolute doddle to corner with - as much as I love the Hornet I did my training and MOD1 on, the Diversion made it feel heavy and lumpen. Surprising amount of torque considering it's a detuned R6 - the trade off being it's quite revvy. Not really a problem - if you want to cruise around knock her into 6th, if you want to start overtaking things drop down the box about three gears and crank the throttle. Pretty satisfying. With a rider of my weight (just under 12 stone) she'll get down to about 21mph in 6th before the vibrations get really strong through the frame.

Thanks all,

After the forum equivalent of raised eyebrows at a faired bike, I'm picking up an er6n later this week.

I'll spend the difference on some warmer gear...

Shocked
