EVERYONE should learn basic first aid!

I came up to the back of a queue of cars today.

Obviously whatever had just happened had happened very recently.

Filtered to the front. Scooter in the hedge. Helmet lying in the middle of the road. Rider in the ditch.

Ditched the bike and went over to the four people stood over the biker "Do you know what you're doing? Has someone called an ambulance?".

No and yes.

Three guys stood over a young lad aged (guessing) 17 or 18. "Wasting your time mate.". One lass, an off-duty copper who was early-on-scene flapping a bit but paying some attention.

Dude is not breathing. No pulse. Copper is flapping about neck injuries and not to move him. I pointed out an intact spine is no use at all if you aren't breathing. Jaw thrust, manual sweep of the mouth then hands only chest compression (lots of blood, sorry, I don't want hep-B).

I was pretty convinced the guy was dead but hell, you got to try. I'm a medical professional and I don't consider myself qualified to decide if someone is not worth bothering with short of their head being detached. This is some mothers son.

So we banged away at him until the ambulance arrived and took over.

Just heard tonight he was flown to Newcastle General by the air ambulance. No further news though. But hell. I'm in Cumbria. I was of the oppinion from looking at him and pounding on his chest like a motherfucker for a good five minutes that this kid was dead as a knit but they do not fly dead bodies 120 miles coast-to-coast in a chopper.

Learn to do first aid. All of you! It was a good 4 or 5 minutes before the ambulance arrived. That's four minutes with or without blood getting to the brain depending on YOUR actions.

DO NOT ride past an accident when you have even the most basic of first aid knowledge, the person stood there over the casualty might be totally panicking and doing nothing useful. They might not even have dialled 999. You might need to tell them this is what they need to do.

I rode past like TEN cars, got to the front and found no fucker taking charge. Do not leave it to someone else. Purely selfishly, it might be me!

I can sleep tonight. I wonder if the three nae-sayers and ten car drivers can?

Good on you for having the balls to help the guy seriously. I have previous experience of what you went through and majority of people just freeze in a panic, asking each other what to do next.

If only first aid basic was taught, so many lives saved.

It's truly horrible having to do CPR on a person who isn't responding to it, I've had to do it before. And it's even worse when a crowd of people just gather round and gawp instead of doing things like trying to help, offering to take over, speak to the 999 operator etc.

You'll know yourself how exhausting it is but most people just don't realise, when you do your training you don't do it for a real-life length of time, only long enough to demonstrate knowledge and competency. After 5 minutes it is truly knackering.


But you're right, they don't generally fly dead people halfway across the country in a helicopter. Especially as there is a doctor on board so they would be qualified to declare them at the scene so police can start the investigation most ricky tick and open up the road sooner.


Kudos and karma to you though. Sounds like you could well have made the difference.

Having done my first aid course earlier this year I couldn't agree more!

I can't believe it isn't taught at school to be honest, such a simple thing could save dozens of lives a day.

I've done RTA first aid several times but nothing worse than a busted hip, I hope I never come across a non-responder.

Hats off for the effort,
What you will find is people don't want to get involved now days as the blame game is popular,
Also a lot of people do a first aid course and then it has changed the next time you do a refresher or full course again, so they think what if I'm doing it wrong,

That said any combo of compressions per breath etc is better then none.

ive done a few first aider courses through work, i think its 5 days for the course then a 2 day refresher every 2 years

luckily never needed to use it, but nice knowing i might be able to make some sort of difference

Wife and I both did an infant first aid course before our son arrived. It also covered adult cpr.
£50 for a days course from the British Red Cross. Well worth it.

It's also worth mentioning the Biker Down courses run by various fire brigades up and down the country. They cover a lot of the basics for tackling this kind of situation. Well worth attending, you never know when you might need it.

Well done for stepping up.

In particular, for not succumbing to the 'Bystander Effect' - i.e. not just becoming the 5th person standing around thinking 'Not worth it / someone else will fix it'.

Did First Aid basics as part of my sports coaching course but that was a while ago now so have (1) Forgotten it pretty much and (2) I suspect the recommendations on CPR have changed since. Best get back on it!

For what it's worth I was taught basic CPR in year 11 at school. I thought that was the norm?

Contrary to popular belief - you won't get done for GBH if you break a rib or two whilst giving CPR!

If you can't get a first aid course through work (like if they already have enough first-aiders) there are lots of ways to get a free course over a couple of weekends - check your local NHS, FastAid or Community First Responder website.

The last course I did also included the use of AED's (Automatic External Defibrilators) which could be useful as they are being located in lots of places like care homes, supermarkets, masonic halls and hotels.

Also worth carrying a small first-aid kit if you have space, but most modern cars have them as standard kit.

First rule at a road accident - protect yourself and the scene! Get some of the useless bystanders warning and directing traffic, and clearing a path for the Ambulance, etc.
