OK,

so the V-Strom did not work out and I ma now looking for something else to stir my loins into the 1L club.

Have been looking at many used and pre-loved bikes, all of which in th5 £5k+ bracket and stumbled upon the GSX-1250FA ST, which looks like a nice size for me (lanky old lard arse that i am) and can pick up a new one for under £7k otr.

Anyone got any expeience on these? advice? opintions? etc.

Cheers

Mike

Opinions...?

My two Penny Coin - Getting a lot of bike for your money at under 7K but it's still just a plastic wrapped Blandit. Looking a bit dated too now.

I'd be looking for something with better quality suspension/USD forks and a bit more than 97hp.

Thread probably relevant for me. I had a B12S previously, and have managed to work out that the GSX1250 is the 'new' Bandit.

In terms of things which are 'a better Bandit', what would those things be? Predictably, it was the weight / handling / suspension of the B12 that were my least favourite things.

A friend has one and on rideouts with a vast range of machinery he is never far from the front so you can make them motor if you need to.

I did fancy the one with all the luggage, that looked a cracking buy but was put off by lack of shaft drive.

Cheers guys,

Whilst talking to the dealer,he pointed out that i could get a new 650 V-Strom for £6k, so that is an option as i kind of liked the position of the 1000, but now you mention the KTM, I quite like the look of those.
More decisions to make Smile

Off to see what is there next week, so will see what takes my fancy Smile

Not exactly built for the blade.

excessively long legs
excessively long body
excessively long arms
bad back

so the sportish bike is not really a comfortable riding style for me.

Besides, I need the backbox and panniers for stuff too.

That said, Super Blackbird is an option, if I sit right on it.

Damn, more choices Smile

What didn't work for you with the SV 1.0?

It's hard to find nice secondhand big upright and or naked bikes in good condition IMO. They never sell a fraction of the number that sportsbikes do, and they aren't the in fashion thing like the hug Adventure trailie phenomenon.

ZRX1100/1200, XJR1300, CB1300, Honda X11, B-king, Z1000's etc would all possibly make for good bikes for the big taller and heavy rider wanting a comfortable capable naked machine.

Not sure what it was about the DL1000 that did not appeal to me as the riding position was great for me, high floor to seat height, long reach to bars, generally good, just something about it did not make me fall in love with it, it felt like just another bike (not that I have had many to compare to).

Maybe the big twin was a little too rough (compared to the CBF smooth 4 cyl), maybe the huge engine braking capabilities of it coupled with no ABS (on that one anyway) causing me to lock the rear a couple of times.

Hence mention of the new 650 version, smaller capacity, so not a big a thump from the twin, ABS to keep the rear in check.

Will have to see what they all feel like once on.

As for second hand, was more looking at either new or Ex-Demo so good condition hopefully goes without saying.

As for the suggestions, cheers for the ideas, yet more to look into Smile I suppose I am lucky in that it's not essential that I get one NOW, I have the luxury of waiting and seeing what takes my fancy and if nothing crops up, I can always pack away the Part X machine until the start of next summer and start again with the inevitable new metal coming out then

ABS will not help with the rear slipping on downshifting, it can only release the brakes momentarily to try prevent the wheel from locking.

I have the older DL650 and I love it, I would have got the newer shape, but I didn't have the money.

I think PreReg DL650s go for 5.5kish on eBay. Try the Tiger 800? It was a bit smoother, but wasn't as tall.

EDIT, Just notice you wanted a 1L, can't help there.

I've got a 2014 GSX 1250FA, I love it. Service intervals are a bit pony (4k miles) & it's quite a weight, full up. But it's a cracking bike, easily does 3 figures, finish is pretty good despite assumptions. Looks good too, got the full luggage on it & the back box encroaches into the pillion seat a bit & mrs reports that the pillion pegs are quite high, but that doesn't bother me too much.

As an everyday, all weather biker, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. Yes, I know it's 'just a Bandit' but it does look pretty good & the low down grunt on it is awesome Very Happy

One thing, the standard exhaust is a massive grapefruit launcher type thing, however Delkevic (amongst others) do a pretty decent aftermarket can for £125

I have one, and I am unashamedly going to gush, because I love it. I can’t say it’s the best bike out there because there are some that’re better, but I can say you won’t find a better bike to handle sport, commuting and touring without spending a wedge more money. Everyone has their own opinion, but for me, of the others out there, nothing that cost £1k, £2k more is £1k or £2k better. A VFR is better speced and may have arguably better build quality, but it’s not £4k better, at least in my eyes. As a package for doing everything, the GSX is a total bargain.

What I love about it most is the torque, it’s just never not there. On a tour, it will effortlessly tow you and a pillion up the motorway, along A roads, anywhere you like, with an uncanny smoothness. Left in a higher gear, it accelerates for an overtake just gently enough that your pillion is happy, but hard enough that you have confidence in the move. There’s just a sweet spot there that it just hits every time.
Drop it down a gear (Or two) and lose the pillion and it transforms into another animal. Wind it on and there’s not much that can keep up. They claim 0-60 in 3.0. I haven’t timed it, mostly because I don’t have the skill, but I can believe the bike is capable of it in the right hands. It’s not going to beat a dedicated sports bike on pure acceleration or handling, but off the track at least, it’s never going to be far behind.

When I bought it, my concern was that after a few months I was going to wish it had v-tech, or a cup holder or whatever else the VFR has, but in reality, I’ve not once wished for something that wasn't there. Not to get all poetic about it, but put simply, I bought it thinking it would be all the bike I would need. Turns out its also all the bike I could want.

cheers guys for the additionals

With the DL1000, probably down to riding style and not used to the torque deceleration on down shift, maybe would get used to it, maybe not (ABS or not), will bare in mind my braking balance in future.

As for "Just A Bandit", not all of us are after a balls out hoon of a thing, so the bandit (or variations on) are the required mix of sport, touring, commuting and other that is wanted.

I appreciate that each of us is different and that B12 riders might not like a KTM and vice versa, which is the reason for my post.

Various opinions on differing machines to get an informed decision, or at least a gently steered one anyway.

You never know, I might just love the Intruder and not bother PXing in the end anyway Smile

Again, thanks for the info, this is the kind of BCF sharing of knowledge that helps those of us new to bikes or looking for a change of pace.

Update.....

Whilst in Swansea yesterday, I popped in to JTs and had a looksee at what was about.

Loads of pretty, shiny things there of all descriptions and designs.

They had a GSX-1250SAF (or whatever) there, in the flesh, just waiting for me to throw my leg across and play.

Firstly, for such a big bike, it didn't half look small, compared to some others there and when I sat upon said beast, it was like being back on my lad's 125.

Knees up around my ears, hanging outside the tank cutouts and generally not right for me at all, so rather disappointed to say the least.

For comparison, there was a VFR800 beside it and that had a much longer peg to seat measure (or so it felt), with my knees sat nicely in the tank dents.

Did see a nice little Varadero there (ok, so not quite so little), with all the whistles and bells on, but was thinking this....

2010 plate Varadero 1000, about £5k8
Spanking new V-Strom 650, about £6k

I'm not going to be doing the whole Euro tour thing, or regular 100+ mile trips, so should i be tempted by the bigger V-Twin, when for not much more I'd get a 0 owner bike in the colour I want?

Decisions, decisions.

Any thoughts most welcome

Mike

My local Suzuki dealer is offering the DL650A at £5591.

I imagine you'll find it for even less if you look around right now.

Have you had a sit on a GSX1400/XJR1300/ZRX1200?

Big, comfy and super lazy. Really nice chilled out motors, should be able to find a mint example well under budget Thumbs Up
