Hey guys,

Been reading all the topics without actually registering for past 6 months Razz

Passed full test (mod2) yesterday, got 1 minor for hill start using front brake (DOH).

Anyway went out on bike today love every minute of it until I had to get breakdown recovery lol. Basically battery went flat in garden so bought trickle charger and said battery was full this morning, must of stalled the bike straight away because I'm getting used to the clutch.

I then went to petrol station and then off to a friends house about 5 mile away, halfway there I stalled at some traffic lights and the bike wouldn't start just making this fast clicking noise sounding like a tazer.

Anyway got home after the recovery and stil the tazer noise Sad

Any ideas?

Not sure how old battery is bought bike 2 months before I actually passed!

Battery must of been on trickle charge for around 16 hours.

Could be a duff battery or a faulty starter solenoid.

Get yourself a multimeter and take some voltage readings across the battery:
1: Connected to the bike as normal, everything switched off.
2: As above, but with ignition on, engine not running.
3: Again, but with the engine running at about 4,000 rpm.

Tell us what results you get, and we can give you a better idea of what's going on.

Get bike started. Check voltage across battery. Do you see 13.5 upwards? Good, just replace battery.

Set to V DC, not the V~ logo. Usually written as 20V.

Put 1 probe on + of battery, 1 on -.

The Fazer started doing the clicky wont start thing a few weeks ago. A new battery cured it. From what I've read any bike battery over three years old is geriatric.

Also massive thank you to the little (about eight stone I reckon!) old Pakistani car park attendant at London Wall car park who gave me a push start.

Because if you stall, it won't start again.

Also the battery runs down, bike dies. Found this out by having to push a Blackbird, near quarter ton of behemoth about 3/4 mile home.

It's either a bad battery and needs a new one or the battery is not charging on the bike.

You need to start the bike and rev it with a volt meter across the battery. The voltage should climb to around 14-15 volts I think. If it does then the charging system is probably o.k and you need a new battery.

I've had a few off-road bikes with no batteries, I thought the stator & reg would give you all the power needed and if the bike dies that means it's one of those that needs fixing at the least.

I missed the fact that he keeps stalling though.

Your off road bikes would have been kick start then?

Once the engine is running the bike generates enough electric to keep itself going

A road bike is electric start, even a modern royal Enfield with kick start needs its battery to be ok as if there isn't enough power to run the starter motor there isn't enough power to run the ecu

I once had a relay fail on my R100RT in the early hours of the morning in Jedburgh. It stopped the starter from working. A passing police patrol car stopped to see what was up and the officers gave me a bump to get me going. I rode it non-stop back to London. I even filled it with the engine running.

I had the option of RAC recovery but didn't fancy the long wait and inevitable faff getting recovered all the way back.

Mind you on another occasion I got a puncture in Inverness in the pissing rain and opted for the recovery back to London. Laughing

/hijack

OP check the charging circuit and battery condition. Thumbs Up

Hi all,

Quick update , took battery to Wilcox they tested it and said it was 0% life and new one is needed. Bought a new one put acid in and now charging although i'm worried i'll stall it and same thing to happen again. Waiting on multi meter to arrive although it won't be till next week and I want to ride it.

Only FI. Carb'd bikes should run fine without a battery though if there's no kicker you will need to bump them (not hard to do).
