I was in my local dealers today having my work scooter MOT'd, i was asking him how long it normally takes to change the steering head bearings, it had taken me 4.5hrs, he laughed and said its a bit easier when you have done a few he does it in under 3.
He then told me the worst bike he's done recently was a new Fireblade with ABS, bleeding the front brakes is 23hrs of Labour.

He had one in rang round a few places and claimed they all told him the same that's a standard time for re-bleeding the system due to the amount of work needed to get to the ABS pump.

Was he winding me up? Or are modern bikes really so difficult to work on?

23hrs to bleed the front brake? My calendar might be wrong but it's not April the first is it? Razz

In 23hrs I'd hope they'd have plenty of time to start from a box of bits and end up with a complete bike that's ready to go. This time frame should also allow for plenty of ciggy breaks and other slacking off.

Erm, what.

It is a home job, I wouldn't expect more than 2 hours at a push using a spoon. Shocked

For every action push whilst spooning there's an opposite and equal reaction.

I'm curious to know why you would need to get to the ABS Pump?

I've changed fluid and bled lots of ABS systems and never needed to get to the pump!

surely by default the pump is self bleeding, by pumping through?

if not, it's a stupid design, even more stupid to need 23 hours labour tying up your dealership network in servicing it.

He probably said "two to three hours" and you've misheard him for 23.

Because bullshit could it possibly take that long for a skilled technician to strip a bike to the barebones, do the necessary then build it back up.

Even I could probably strip a bike down to its bare bits and rebuild it in 23 hours. And I don't know what the fuck I'm doing half the time.

The ABS pump on the Honda system has a 'self bleed' mode which took 2 people to operate the last time I witnessed it done. Laughing

This is from dry and with a new pump.

23hours is definitely wrong mind.

The pump itself has bleed nipples on it also.

I have to say by any standards that is a long labour.
