My friend has an s4 mini with an obliterated screen, how can I get the contacts off?

If I plug it in it recognises it as a portable media player but not with anything inside it.

Cheers,
Chris

There is stuff on the Googles about logging onto the 'find my phone' thingy, unlocking the phone and then connecting to Kies.

If you download and install Kies (get right one for the Android version if you know it) and plug it in it may see the phone (as PC obviously does) and you can backup then. Try it, what have you to lose?

Righto,

option 1
Find someone with a working s4mini, open it up and fit the screen to the busted phone.
get contacts off.
replace working screen on original phone.

option 2
Is it rooted, and does it have CWM?
Grab a backup of the whole device
Look through the files for the stored contacts (maybe be encrypted though :/ )

Has the owner of the phone checked their google contacts online...?

Try logging in to gmail using the account that the S4 was set up with. There is very good chance that all the contacts were synchronised to there, so you can get them from the web without touching the phone.
If you replace the phone with another Android, it will just download them automagically when you give it the login details.
