I currently have a Honda Varadero 125. I am looking at bikes for when I get my A2 license (UK). I believe anything less than 770 mm seat height will be too small as I'm currently learning on a Honda CBF500. So, this is what I've come up with so far.

Aprilia Mana 850 GT

Kawasaki Versys

Honda XL700 Transalp

Kawasaki ER-6N

Suzuki DL650 V-Storm

Aprilia Shiver 750

Suzuki SV650

Over 770mm - Check.

Under 47BHP - Check.

You can thank me later.

Thats a list of bikes that are bigger and more bulky than the vara by quite a long way.

I went from a vara 125 to a ZZR600 and it felt a little squished at first but after adjusting how I sat on the bike and getting used to it and I love it.

Have you sat on any?

I've sat on a couple of the above when looking to replace after a crash and wasn't keen as I couldn't reach the floor quite as well as I'd have liked but you might love it.

I'm seeing MT-07's for £5,000, I'm trying to not spend more than £3,500. ZZR600 looks as if it has a low handle bar, I don't think I would like that. Saying those bikes are bigger and more bulkier than Varadero by quite a long way has made me uneasy. Honestly, I don't know much about bikes. I've been training on a Honda CBF500 but I get uncomfortable, so I figured I would want to look at bikes with a seat height similar to my Varadero. I'll take a look at bikes and sit on them eventually, I just wanted some input.

You can't have a ZZR600, you can't restrict it down.

Despite it being a sports bike, it's a sports tourer, i'm 6'1 and can sit comfortably upright on it and use it daily for commuting.

You may, when you go and sit on a transalp or Vstrom that you love it and it's not that heavy / bulky

I'd got used to my ZZR (a heavy bike itself) by the time I was looking, the v strom / GS etc have the weight a bit higher up and the tank comes up higher than the ZZR / vara (if i remember correctly) giving the feel of big and bulky

go find a dealer, tell them you're about to do your A2 and looking to get an idea of what you want to get and can you sit on a couple of bikes.

you might thing "what was that muppet with morse code for a username on about, this is great" go pass your tests and buy a bike I hate.

If everyone liked the same thing, we'd all be riding round on identical bikes.

BMW F650 GS?

50BHP from factory, so I bet if you bought a 2000 to 2005 model it would probably have lost a few BHP by now making it road legal for you.

I got an SV650S after I passed my test (few months ago) and love it. Most of my riding is on A roads, and I take it easy as I have already sped myself into doing a speed awareness course later this month, so have slowed my riding right down. I find it far more enjoyable, and I don't spend the whole ride worriedly anticipating a copper with a speed gun around the next bend.

If you're the sort of person who gets pleasure from the travel aspect of the bike, and you have inclination to explore, or do overnight or longer trips on the bike my advice would be get an adventure/ dual sport type bike. I think for the new biker atleast, a full on sports bike is probably best left for the summer months, which is a shame if you plan to ride all year round.
