PostPosted: 10:23 - 23 Sep 2014    Post subject: cbf 125 speed Reply with quote

I have bought new cbf 125 2 months ago (now 800 on clock). The problem I have is that I can hardly reach 60 mph on it. On straight flat road with no head wind will get to about 58-60 on 4th gear. After shifting to 5th I can't gain any speed. Have done 600 miles service on time oil changed and the velve clearence checked.
While I had a fuel pump exchanged I used loan cbf 125 which got to over 70 in the same conditions. Any ideas what the issue can be.

<Mototune>You ran it in carefully and gently exactly as per recommendation, didn't seal the piston rings, and are down on compression.

The loaner bike has been ragged from day 1.</Mototune>

Or their speedos are reading completely differently.

Shall I rag her now or you think it will not help. I started to go harder on her since service. Any suggestions.
I don't know about thier speedo but you could tell it was picking up the speed easier and going faster.

Riding above 60 on the CBF is not pleasant anyway so you're not missing much.

The case it I was and am worried if everything is ok with engine as I have experienced the other bike to be more powerful.

Hand it in to Honda and tell them the difference and that despite you following their instruction, the bike does not run properly. You either want it fixing or a new one.

No. You fucked up, you trusted them.

This is complete speculation on my part, by the way.

Did you compare the claimed speeds against a GPS speedo?

I did check mine. Have no time to check thier. If it doesn't improve by riding it hard I take it back to Honda and have them to check compression and other stuff.

Roughtly same power as a CG125 which commonly cant manage much above 60. Note max power is ~8300rpm, so that dictates which gear to be in.

Also check brakes are not binding/excessive heat after a ride.

Consider the valve clearances are adjusted by shitty lock nuts, and is a fiddly job. They may be incorrect but relatively easy to check.

Also check compression, I say its unlikely to be rings, but relatively cheap to fix if it was.

Do test, sell bike for a proper one. NSR125 perhaps?

My CBF would quite happily pull me along at 65 and i'm a fat arse. It's speedo did read 70 when doing so, check it with a GPS.

Also, IIRC, 5th gear has no pull. 4th was used to max it out

I get an indicated 70mph most mornings on my way to work, but it is downhill. The bike will sit at 60 mph with ease, and I am a fatty fatty bum bum. There is no *real* pull in 5th.

I have a 2011 CBF btw.

I wonder if tef is currently writting a "do your tests" essay style reply..

Might be helpful to see how far out the speedo might be. Either using a sat nav, or side by side with another vehicle. Beyond that, I wouldn't mess about too much and see what Honda say.

Same as Paul above.

Ive had 80mph with wind behind me and slightly down hill, but will do 70mph on the flat with ease.

Mines a 2014 model and im 6'4" and 17st lol

I mention the height because when the winds against me and up hill.... well im lucky to get 40-45mph :/
Its pretty frustrating that too... specially when its an 'A' road and a 60mph speed limit. Often end up with cars up my arse Sad

That's the limitation of all 125s though.

I am less then 13 st 6 ft. As I said will do 60 mph with real struggle.
Compared it with GPS and its bang on with my clock.
Taking it back to Honda soon let them check it and deal with it.

I only got mine last night, Its a 09 one with 6,800 miles on it.
Took it out tonight to my dads and found its comfy at 50-55mph but I did get it upto 65 with a good run up and a slight head on wind.
On the way home(took a different route) I was still comfy at 50mph but maxing out around 60mph due to less runs to pick up the speed.
Still fun though.

Had a 2013 CBF125. I'm not the slimmest chap in the world. My bike would do 65 indicated comfortably, 70 indicated when tucked in and downhill. No pull in 5th really. The first 100 miles were taken gently, after that it was ridden fairly aggressively.

According to motorcyclenews.com and visordown.com, top speed is 65mph.

Thanks for all. Just one small question. How easily should the rest wheel spin when on centre stand. When I move it by hand in neutral it does less than half turn. Is it normal and can it influence performance.

There will always be resistance from the friction between the chain, sprockets and the various bearings, less when everything's hot obviously. You should be able to turn the wheel smoothly by hand with little effort, but don't expect to be able to spin it like a bicycle wheel.

This. I have been looking at the rear wheel recently (replacement tyre and chain needed tightening). A soft pull would spin it about a third to a half of a turn.

Saying that, since the chain was tightened, my acceleration has improved.

Is there any oil in the engine, have you checked the condition of the oil and its level? these bikes burn oil a fair bit when thrashed so keep an eye on the level and do change the oil as often as possible and certainly a lot more frequently than Mr Honda recommends.
