I passed my test in February this year and since then I've done less than 1000 miles on my Bandit 400, I think I've narrowed this down to the fact that I just don't like the bike as it's a bit of a nearly finished project with no time or motivation to finish it, I just want a bike that I can get on and ride without being reminded that there's a fuckload of jobs to do on it.

So I'm looking to buy a Daytona 650, I've read the odd posts about them on here and read most of googles offerings but looking for opinions on them now they're getting on a bit, any comments/advice is welcome. Also considering a B1H (I think) ZXR but I'm pretty much set on the Daytona as I love how it looks and it is reputed to be a nippy, well handling bike. There's a nice example in a dealer near me if I decide to go forward with a test ride.

TIA Thumbs Up

Edit:

Budget: Up to £3000 for a nice one (Low mileage, silver with flag)
Usage: Mainly solo ride-out's on dry days, possible touring but not really a major factor, 3 mile commute when weather permits, would like to do a couple of track days when I get some more mileage under my belt.

£3k will get you an average but straight 675. Aim a bit higher!!!

Not had a go one a 600 or 650 but unless they'd have to be pretty special to beat a C1H, which is like a B1H but a bit more refined.

Bit 'meh' - think Honda CBR600-F and so on.
Do everything ok, reasonably relaxed position etc, but nothing special.

B1H is a lot more lively, but also more likely to bite back.

They are 650cc's and made in Daytona, and are yellow. Except the orange ones, which are green.

Having owned a 600, with the 650 not doing much more than slightly increased cc, I'd be looking at the better jap offerings or going for a 675, infinitely better.

Slacker - Link plz! I've seen them at ~£3.5k but theres usually a reason they're that cheap, I've always ended up trying to stretch my budget and ended up with shitters of things in the past so I'm looking at buying a mint older model this time. I would like a 675 though and I'm in no real rush...

G - I was expecting something along those exact lines, I'm a n00b looking for something to grow into, not playing top trumps down the pub, your 'meh' should about be on the fringes of my limits for a while Smile

thx1198 - Hmm... What about the mauve ones?

Paddy. - 675's will be shite in my budget and not seen anything that appeals as much aesthetically as the 600/650's, I buy with heart not head...

eBay > completed listings. Proves it can be done, eg this:

You just need to patient and make lots of offers. It's not necessarily what they're advertised for, more like what the seller is prepared to accept.

I'd spend £1500 on a G/J/A ZX6R then.

Despite the reasonably boring engine, the 675 is a pretty focused bike.

Yeah I went and did that after I posted Embarassed

Good news all round! I think I'll be trying to sort a test ride out next weekend to see how I get on with them. Any horror stories?

G - May be a possibility, love zx7r's but apparently a bit of a tank, will have a look at the 6's.

I had a Daytona 650. If you're thinking of it as a sports tourer in a frock you'll be happy. If you want a sports bike, it's bland and uninspiring. It's the equivalent of the Fireblade for the 600s. So tame and easy it's boring to ride (I ride a 900 Fireblade now). The Daytona 600 couldn't compete in the numbers with the Japanese 6s and so Triumph just added more CCs to make it compete, except there's no class for that so it still couldn't compete. Quality is pretty poor on them overall. Definitely a British built bike. Don't buy my old one, I had to get rid because I rode it all year round, everything electrical started to bread. The speed sensor stopped reading, I had to have a new stator, new wiring loom due to corrosion and broken connections, the clutch switch failed, it was shocking. There are plenty that have been kept in the garage, so ensure you get one of those if it's really what you want.

They seem to hold their value very well, but I cannot fathom why. There are much better bikes out there.

The 675 is such a totally different beast I'm amazed Triumph made them both.

go with a J or A model if you do look at ZX6R's

J/A have the dual headlights which looks much better ... also they are bright as fook... or at least mine are xD

Triumph 650 Daytona handles well, is more nimble than a std J1/2 ZX6R, and about the same bhp and speed as one too! I like them and they look slightly better finished than GSXR600K's or even the ZX6R.

A 636Ninja A1 would be probably a touch quicker again, and the fugly focused B1H Ninja's are probably a better more sporty option, but i couldn't live with the looks only a mother could love!

You're not really comparing apples with apples there. They stopped making the 650 in 2005. The B1H is superb but I wouldn't want to like with one, super sharp and stiff and the first supersports to have radials (and USDs ahead of most of the rest), great engine but a bitch when you're not on it. C1H is similar but softer and well in the OPs budget.

I'm sure he does mean brakes.
However, they're Tockico, so they'll still suck Sad.

Can probably stick yamaha brakes on there with slight mods.
The riding position and setup is pretty 'sharp' so won't be for all.

I agree that they didn't directly compete, but take away my old ZX6R J1 and put a Daytona 650 in it's place and it would be sweet enough with me. Any of the 636's would be a faster bike, but then so would a same age R6 etc.

I don't always buy for the mostest bike I can get for the cash, or the best handling or fastest etc. When I got my J1 Ninja, it was between that and a Triumph TT600. I was unimpressed with the first Alloy frame CBR6, and didn't even consider the Y2k R6 or GSXR600 as I didn't really like them.

Quite agree, pretty sure it's mother disowned it due to it's hideous squashed-frog looks!
