Front tyre: 0.5mm
Rear tyre: 0.6mm

I need a tyre gauge, cos I thought they were close but I'd no idea they were that low, it's lucky I've been taking it easy on the corners as the Bridgestone BT-021s on there have been warning me they won't lean as far with some wobble clearly coming through.

In the shop now to get them replaced with some Maxxis Supermaxx Diamonds, front and rear. Hopefully I'll get around 6K out of those so they won't need changing til the next service.

Any tips on your favourite tyres? I figure as I'm going to keep the XJ-6 for a while I might as well try a few different sets. I'm looking for a good all round tyre, hard wearing, good handling in all weathers. Doesn't have to be a chicken strip special, I'm more interested in balance across all areas so it will inspire confidence.

You fail at life as you did not kill of the rear with a burnout.

Dems the rules.

Had some form of Maxxis supermaxx on my ZZR when I bought it. Receipts showed they were 4 years and about 8k miles old. Still had lots of tread left but I replaced em as they both had slow punctures. Can't really comment on their handling as the previous owner had left the worlds biggest chicken strips on them so they handled crap due to that.

Got Michelin Pilot Roads now (about £140 for the pair and came with a free optimiser thing). Nice tyre and seem to be wearing at an ok rate, handle well and I have yet to lose traction with them. The PR2, 3 and 4 are meant to be even better.

also Thumbs Down for no burnout on old tyre Laughing

I know you're probably joking but not sure I'd know how to do one, now that you've said that I wish I had though... Very Happy

Hold front brake good and hard, get a decent amount of revs and dump the clutch. Don't pussy out on the revs or dumping clutch - if you don't break the rear tyres traction in one hit, at best you'll stall and at worst you'll go over backwards.

Couple of fingers hold front brake on, rest of hand can turn throttle. Stand so your weight is off the back wheel, put bike in first and add revs as you let off the clutch. Back tyre will break traction and spin up smoking.

Good tip I heard for your first one was to find somewhere that tarmac meets grass. Front wheel on the tarmac, back wheel on the grass.

Obviously you'll fuck up the grass doing it, so probably not your local cricket ground Smile

Do you remember nothing from your CBT?

Tyre depth?

https://static-numista.com/catalogue/photos/royaume-uni/g69.jpg

The little row of round dots are 1mm from the edge. Failing that along the tyre side wall you will find the letters TWI (Tyre wear indicator) follow that arrow beside it to the bumps in the tread. They are 0.8mm and if your tyre is level with that you are illegal.

As for tyres. Put the Bridgestone T30 on mine a few weeks ago. Fantastic tyre for the bike.

Back in the day (2004-2006) it was quite normal to turn up to a ride out with a tyre like that!

Bridgestone tyres also used to be thicker so you could cut additional tread with an x-acto knife.

Michelin Road Pilot 3 on my XJ6. On my second set, lasted around 8k.

Fantastic in the wet.

I was thinking about the RP3s, sadly they didn't have any in stock, could be worth considering next time I want new rubber. How much did you pay for yours JFK?

Fairly impressed with the Supermaxx Diamonds so far, steering is a little different seems there's a touch more understeer on tight corners but no penalty for just leaning in more to correct.

I'm very impressed with the performance of the PR2/3's BUT fitted a PR2 on the rear and whilst the rear is still a nice shape with bags of tread, the PR3 on the front which was fitted about 500 miles later is squared off, running low on centre tread and scalloped. I think it's got about 3000 miles on it.
If I can still get them I'll be looking for PR2's all round as the 3's don't appear to last any longer than the Power Pilots.

You've gone from BT021, the shittest of shit, to the Diamonds, which aren't all that better but still better than the 021s.

I've seen someone get 15,000 out of Pilot Road 2s... which was damn good Shocked
