PostPosted: 10:09 - 09 Oct 2014    Post subject: led wiring help please. Reply with quote

hi,

i could do with a little help please. i have just brought my son a generic worx 125 2013.

i have purchased some bright led strip lights to stick on his bike to make him stand out more. i will be adding 1 to the rear 1 to the front and 1 for each side of the bike.

my question is what wires on the bike would be the best to connect them to, i don't want to wire them direct to the battery as they would be constantly on.

the leds have a black and red wire coming from them so i expect that is a live and negative.

so please if you are able to help with what wires i need to connect them to so they only power on when the bike is running,

thank you for any help

Wire them into the side light and the rear position light.

Find them by turning the ignition on (but not starting the bike). Then pushing the lights onto the first notch.

Depending on the bike you can either splice them in, or trace them back to the loom and put something in between the bullet connectors.

It really shouldn't matter leds don't have polarity. I have the same thing up front, I wired mine into the live going into the headlight (Which ever wire isn't black.) To the earth on my horn (Black wire)

You can wire it into any earth even just a bolt on the frame, you just need a live to be switched. Thumbs Up

Led DO have polarity if you buy one on its own they have one leg longer to denote polarity.

Being a diode they wont usually blow but will not work unless you wire them the right way round Smile

You can run them from side lights or use a relay plenty of previous posts on relays etc.

The Strips I have have 2 equal length, equal colour wires coming off of them, they work either way round.

LEDs and polarity. The clue is in the "diode".

+ve will be the wire leading to the centre of any incandescent bulb, -ve will be the wire leading to the housing.

Whats confusing about my Post it is a simple statement which is true.

OK LEDS do have polarity but my strips didn't.

Mine are like this, but white, they work either way round, there is no way to distinguish between the wires.

I'd suggest you be careful as to the colours of the lights you are directing to the sides. Note - I don't know the actual regulations but lorries and the like have orange to the sides - don't showing red or white to the side.

Also - where did you bring the bike from?

You can't see why that's confusing? Very Happy

I also have those strips. I also also have different LED strips where the polarity does matter.

It does matter, unless exceptionally, it doesn't.

The second post I meant which merely states my LED Strip light don't have polarity.
