PostPosted: 11:06 - 13 Oct 2014    Post subject: Goretex vs. Isotex Reply with quote

Another boring gear question I'm afraid. I need to replace my textile kit after an accident (the insurance has just come through). I've always been a big fan of goretex, and all the stuff I'm replacing is goretex. I wouldn't usually trust any kit that wasn't.

However, I've been offered a big discount on some Weise gear through a charity I ride for, and they use something called "Isotex" instead of goretex. As far as I can tell this is a coated fabric instead of the internal membrane that goretex use, and my concern is that makes it less durable.

I've seen overall decent reviews of Weise as a brand, but I'm particularly interested in this Isotex stuff. Does anyone know if it's a waterproof as goretex, and as durable? Should I keep the goretex faith and not be tempted by the discounts, or am I worrying over nothing?

TL;DR Is Isotex as good as Goretex?

Many thanks,

Steve.

I have some Weise trousers, no idea on what they use for waterproofing, but they are by far the most waterproof part of my gear.

I'd still go goretex.

Can't comment on bike gear but I've had Regatta coats with Isotex in and personally I don't think they breathe as well as Gore-tex. Stopped wearing the Isotex lined one for walking because it was too sweaty.

May not be an issue for you with bike gear though.

I have the "RiDE recommended" Weise Dynastar II trousers and jacket. The trousers are by far the least waterproof part of my gear.

The jacket sucks too, but the trousers are leaky, flimsy, breaky dog shite. The trousers have only been surpassed on the dog shit scale by a pair of Weisse highway boots. Weise make badly designed, badly made crap and I will never again buy anything from them.

Weisse dynastar II uses Isotex. The leaking at armpits, elbows, knees and crotch is probably less to do with the membrane than it is with the design/manufacture of the jacket/trousers, but I'm under the impression Goretex only allow their membrane to be used in stuff they have checked the design of. I have no trust in Weise designs.

These are mine:

https://www.twowheel.co.uk/images/thumbnails/15/250/weise_x_blade_3.jpg

Weise x-blade. Crashed twice in them (once more or less walking speed), the 40mph crash took the shine right off one side of them, and a nice hole about the size of a 20p on the knee. Still remarkably waterproof.

Yesterday was the first time they've leaked in a non-damaged part, a very small amount of water through the crotch, after an hour in consistent heavy rain. They did far better than my boots which are far less crashed in and much much newer! Laughing

Not bad for £60.

Quite a few manufacturers seems to produce their own branded goretex stuff now.. Although i still feel goretex has the lead.. Just dont seem to get AS sweaty in it then other stuff...

I got annoyed with wearing kit that got really heavy in the wet and eventually let the cold in. The outside layer just sponged it up..

So i invested in a goretex pro shell jacket, where the protective and waterproof layer is bonded together.. so water has nowhere to soak in.

Costs alot, but i works! Cheaper option is just wear a coat over your bike jacket.. Army goretex?

Or under it. The jacket takes the force out of the water, leaving the under-layer with a much easier job. I do it this way round to avoid flapping and ballooning.

Hmm, Goretex vs Isotex.

I prefer to use Acemotrex for winter riding. Combined with my Laxamotervortex socks, it provides an awesome seal against the driving rain and bitter cold.

Don't forget your Fodacoretorex scarf.

I'd think the quality of stitching and the design of the garment is more important.

Goretex is best. They are pretty strict on only supplying gear they approve of so chances are if its got goretex in it its going to be a quality product

Had both in many guises over the years; Goretex always wins.

goretex is the most breathable, anyone who uses it in their garments has to show prototypes to goretex before production begins so they can ensure it's been used correctly

Can't really beat quality goretex gear imo. All of my HG stuff is still going strong (Including the jacket I practically tore in half on the BCF mini motos a few years back), a good thing since I can't really replace it anymore Neutral

Nah, Goretex guarantee is not actually for a lifetime, it's for what they consider the lifetime of the product, which for gloves could be as little as year.
