Suzuki's superdream. t's a evolution of the earlier GSX400 twin, which was, in it's day.. probably July the 12 1983.... considered 'a bit dull' but generally pretty tough.
Suzuki's four-strokes were still a bit of a novelty for them, and they had a reputation for being a bit belt ad braces in the motors, and 'not' suffering the same sort of cam-chain calamities Honda's did!
What they bolted around their engines then tended to be slightly better made than it is now, too, but the twins were always budget offerings, and never the best; and rampant cost cutting in the '90's saw quality of the non headline models become quite appalling. A refugee of the 80's, a '92 model probably fares reasonably well, BUT its an old bike, of even older design.
That engine was hogged out 20% and its oil system beefed up to make the GS500, which was similarly considered dull but generally pretty tough in it's Day.. 27th March 1996, I think that was.... but time has re-written as something of a grenade, in modern times, usually due to aged maintenance requirements, modern owners frequently neglect.
400? Quarter century old? If its lasted this long there's obviously something enormously wrong with it.... or no-one can believe there isn't!
On a bike that age, condition is ALL. I would suspect it's spent a large part of its life laid up, used, and would be suspicious that if its last long layup was relatively recent, that it is very likely to suffer imminent resuscitation failure, as initial recommissioning replacing the perished bits and the ones a MOT man might moan about, gets it back on the road, BUT asked to work for a living, use sees the bits not tackled start to show their weakness as suspension bushes start to break down, or gummed rings see accelerated bore wear etc.
As an A2 bike, like the 500, that doesn't need any mods to make complaint, it's a tempting target; BUT It's a twenty five year old bike, of little or no particular classic interest or appeal; it's still a reasonably useful little bike, but it's every day commuter worth is significantly dented by by relatively high routine maintenance standards of the era it was built, exacerbated by shear age.
It's NOT a bike I would pick to try and get to work o on time every day of the week in all weathers! And It would have t be particularly stunning in it's condition for me to consider it over a newer, more common, more every day livable commuter twin like a CB500 or ER5!
