Well, that's the first one done! Went out this am on my new YBR 125 Custom after CBT 3 weeks ago. 8am so quiet local roads (mostly). I don't think I've been as scared or excited since I lost my virginity! (I'm 59 and have taken early retirement this week).

12 miles and all went OK with no major probs. (Been a driver for over 30 years and a cyclist). Impressions are: bike is excellent and really pleased with it. Feels solid and inspires confidence when cornering (tight bends easier than I thought). Gearing is quite low, I think. A few times tried to change up and couldn't so must have been in top!

Determined not to rush, but main problems were remembering which gear I'm in; finding the gear lever; finding the rear brake pedal; changing down and coming to a halt on a hill then starting off smoothly (more practice rquired). I did remember to cancel indicators, though perhaps relied too much on mirrors and not doing shoulder checks. Sometimes hard to hear the engine revs with wind noise (though did have the visor up). Hitting all the bumps. Not slowing down for sleeping policemen. Cold thighs. My God, there's a car behind me...

Re-reading this I realise it must sound a bit pathetic, and I'm sure many of you are having a chuckle, but I'm happy that a major milestone has been passed!

I do have a 60 mile round trip planned for next weekend. Just need to adjust the mirrors and wait for some more dry weather later in the week. Mon to Wed looks wet :o(

Verdict: OK but needs more road miles. Bike: 10/10. Me: 6/10

Hope this helps others just starting out!

This is normal behaviour for car drivers taking up bikes. You have to get used to using much higher revs on a small bike. You can pottle around all day on low to mid revs but peak torque is at 6500rpm on the YBR - way above what most cars drivers would use - and once you hit top gear you have no choice but to let it rev if you want to get anywhere. You'll get used to the higher engine note soon enough.

Appreciate that, Pete. Good to know and will definitely bear in mind. Bike is new so have to keep under 5000 rpm for a bit.

You don't have to keep under 5000rpm... its just advised. However, I'd be getting it warm, revving it to 9000rpm and changing gear.

Best of luck with the bike, you'll learn to enjoy it a lot more come summer too. Thumbs Up

I usually aim for a cruising speed at 4500-5000 rpm on my Fazer. I wouldn't bother with the two top gears below motorway speeds.

Hmmm I'm new to a fazer too, I find my self checking that I'm in the correct gear as it sounds like is getting trashed

Hill starts are easy if you take your time. Let the clutch out until it starts to bite, let off the back brake then proceed as normal but with a bit more throttle. I used to hate hill starts but commuting through Glasgow city centre has made them mandatory...

First ride without an instructor feels weird, but you'll grow to love it!

I'm only chuckling as that describes my first couple of rides out!

Let the engine rev, it's a small bike engine, it's designed for it!

do you have a rev counter on the bike? if so, when the rev counter gets near the red line, change up, if cruising along at a steady pace you can change up for comfort / economy but you may need to change back down to accelerate.

If you don't have a rev counter, change up when it gets as noisy as a group of yoof showing off in their cars to each other.

to summarise the above, let the bike rev a bit, you'll get used to everything else.

Wow, that brings back memories of my first ride on my 125 also.

I used to stick to a circular route about 8 miles long of small country lanes.. I think on my first weekend I had done 200+ miles of the same circle! Laughing

Taking it easy is the best way mate. It will all become second nature soon enough, and you'll have wondered what the issue was.

Thumbs Up

You're doing it right, there is a big mental adjustment to be made coming from a car, particularly modern quiet low revving ones.

Heh, yes, I'd do this all the time.

A fairly common mod on cruiserish 125s is lengthening the gearing. Once the chain has stretched a bit, you can fit a front sprocket with +1 or even +2 teeth. It's not going to make you go any faster, but it does make it feel a bit less frenzied.

What's that then? Eh?

5000 rpm

I followed the run-in procedure on my new 125 and wish I hadn't.

If I go new again, it'll be warm up, rag it (on and off the throttle), and oil change early and often until the first scheduled change. Like at 20, 100, 300 miles.

You did better than me on my first ride. My highlight was shifting down to 1st gear whilst still doing 30.

Hell's bells! Shudder to think what that must've been like. Well, at least you lived to tell the tale.

This sounds exactly like my experiences at the moment.

I keep looking over to the far left expecting there to be a wing mirror instead of just down and left a bit.

Also need to work on my lifesavers.

Still, having the time of life!

Yep, that all sounds familiar. I'm a late starter on bikes too. I think I'm still not using all the revs I should. Have fun. Are you thinking about moving up to something bigger?

You are not alone. This describes almost verbatim my first, and probably subsequent, rides after passing my Mod 2! It will come with time; I remember passing my driving test and thinking I would never be able to listen to music as I was concentrating so much on driving the car. It really doesn't take long to hone your skills and it's just practise.

I've only been riding my bike a month - riding independently without an instructor felt incredibly daunting initially and though it might sound really stupid, a couple of times I just rode around the town I did my training in as it felt familiar, I was able to practise stops, starts, gear changes, hill starts etc. and I was able to relax a bit before heading off and riding along more unfamiliar routes. It's all about what works for you and not stepping hugely out of your comfort zone straight away and scaring the bejeezus out of yourself while you're still new to it all.

Do you wear earplugs? I hated the muffledness (no, I know that isn't a word) at first but do find they help cut down the noise; without them I come back from a ride with my ears whistling like mad.

I still find it hard to believe I actually have a bike licence and a bike I can ride whenever I like. I went for a ride out on my own on Sunday and love the freedom; just me and the bike. It also cheers me up when I get waved at by other bikers - you feel part of something - and it's a great feeling Very Happy

Countrygirl - Well, thanks for your encouraging comments and many congrats for passing your test. Well done! Sadly, the weather's been abysmal these last few days so haven't ventured forth, but tomorrow looks fine so I'll be donning the gear (including new long johns - yes, I know I should MTFU, but they're modern ones, not the grandad type Surprised and getting in some more miles.

Have read good things about earplugs, but still a bit sceptical as you were, but I'll bear your comments in mind. Have a 60 mile trip planned for Saturday so we'll see how it goes - in at the deep end!
