Got a budget of £100, what amateur friendly camera shall I aim to buy? I'm more than happy to buy used, so what's the best camera for my budget and needs?

By scouting eBay, it looks like I can afford a used digital SLR... but then again I know fuckall about cameras, so which one's should I be avoiding and which one's should I keep an eye out for?

I'll be using the camera for social use, nothing professional. Taking pictures on holidays, of motorbikes, day out's etc.

Like you I brought a DSLR camera, as I already had a few pocket point and shoot cameras. Turned out used it for a short while and never used it again. Just took to much space up on the bike packing. Found a small cheap instant camera just as good. Have a good think about do I really need one? More than I would like one. The down side is the pictures are so dam big, that you have to crop them to get a good presentation on the web. Where a pocket one is set and they are the right size.

The thing with DSLRs is that camera bodies are like other tech, they depreciate reasonably rapidly as better technology comes out, but decent lenses can last decades, if cared for.

This also implies that if you buy a DSLR along with a couple of lenses, you're buying into a "system" - the lens mount. The more lenses you buy, the more expensive it will be to change system in the future. IME you want at least one zoom, and one fast (low f-number) prime lens for low light without silly exposure times or high noise, and to use shallow depth of field for focus effects.

DSLRs are a PITA to carry around though. The best camera is the camera you've got on you when you get an opportunity to take a photo. Taking a DSLR out is an event, you won't forget you've got it, and you'll feel like you're wearing a giant neon tourist sign walking around with it everywhere. So if it's just social use, I'd suggest getting a phone with the best camera you can afford.

I always use Panasonic Lumix cameras, should be able to pick up a used TZ40 for that.

Leica lens, decent amount of options for a point and shoot.

I took these photos with a TZ7, which is old tech compared to the 30+ range. Honda use the TZ47 for their photography purposes. Thumbs Up Click the pics, then click the magnify button on the non-cat ones to see larger version.

So thats what a £70 camera can do, the TZ30 range improves on these dramatically. Small too!
