I saw the cops out in force this morning on Brixton Hill policing the cycle boxes/advanced stop lines. Odds-on they will be doing other areas too this this week as they seem to wait a while than have a little purge so keep those eyes peeled!

I steer well clear of cycle boxes, full of bloody suicidal cyclists.

At every light I caught this morning, bar one, the cycle box was filled with a car, usually a van or minicab. I tucked in behind them.

The one light where this wasn't the case, a guy on a Triumph Bonneville waited in it. It was completely unnecessarily, IMO, because we were at the front of the queue. I stopped at the first line and he stopped at the second, as if that was where he was supposed to go. I see a lot of scooters do that too.

I will use them if it's safer (I won't be stuck next to a bus or lorry who can't see me), and take the hit if caught, but I don't see the reason to routinely use them.

They've been doing it the last few days along commercial road, 3 cyclists blitzed through and were completely ignored by the plod. Rolling Eyes

Am I right in thinking the rules suggest pulling in behind the first car in the queue rather than filtering right to the front?
Also; can you not just say you crossed the first line when the light was amber, then it went red so you stopped at the next line Very Happy

You must not overtake the closest (stopped) vehicle to a light controlled pedestrian crossing. You must not overtake at all when there are zig-zag lines. "Filtering" is overtaking. Such serious, very crime.

Round here, there are rarely pedalists in them because they don't (by and large) either:

1) Stop for reds.

2) Put themselves at risk by stopping in front of traffic that's just going to squeeze back past them the moment the lights change.

<FACT-FACE>Because of that, powered two wheelers can make better, safer use of the Special Box than pedalists can.</FACT-FACE>

Speaking of Special Rules, how's that threat to criminalise overtaking pedalists coming along?

And how long was the light on amber for? Undue care and attention.

So amber is on for 3 seconds... Either you go through or stop behind the correct line Thumbs Up

If safe to do so, not slamming on brakes to do it.

Both wrong....

https://content.met.police.uk/Article/Advanced-Stop-Lines/1400018009433/1400018009433

....you're perfectly entitled to stop in the cyclists box if you need the space to stop if the lights change as you approach, nothing wrong with that at all, as per the link.

The issue with using it as an excuse is they dont just arrive and book you for it, they'll be hiding on the sides waiting to watch you filter to the front. Someone on here put a video up recently of just that.

Crossing either line under amber is only excusable if it was not possible without the risk of causing an accident. You're not at liberty to cross it just because it changes as you approach.

Not enough cops in Edinburgh to bother with this low level shit.

Really not up there on the list of give a fuck stats.

Certainly wasn't for me when I was on response, as it's just that.

Response.

I use the cycle boxes all the time. Mon to Fri on my commute.

I'm faster off the line than a MAMIL on a fixie.

Applies pretty much anywhere. The Met are Special though; there's always funds available for doing Operation Selective Policing.
