I went up to the local quarry to have a go at filming with a phantom 2 quad copter and spotted a couple of guys on trials bikes so thought I'd try some moving targets.....didn't know where they were going and not tried filming a moving target before! It shows I know....but learning quickly and want to give it another go with some more planing!....anyhow here is what I got.

Nice work.

That ground is well and truly dead, and I wouldn't fancy a belly-full of that green water much either.

I double-dare you to stick a POV camera on it and do a lap of the Skerries standing on Carmel Head Very Happy

Looks pretty good Thumbs Up You haven't done the "go up and film stuff from really really high so you can't really see what's going on" thing that a lot of camera drone people seem to do so that's a big plus for me. Obviously it's hard to know where the riders will go so hard to follow them smoothly but still good going Thumbs Up

I like the idea of camera drones but from what I've seen of them (especially in mountain bike and motocross videos as they seem to be really popular in those) they're not used to their full potential. I get the whole going up high to establish the location or to end the video but you see a lot of videos filmed from a ridiculous altitude when you consider that they're generally filming with a fisheye lens.

I haven't got a drone so I don't know if it's possible but I'd like to see drones being used in a similar way to cable cams, cranes and dollies. Tracking fairly close to a rider from maybe just above head height would be cool and is a shot you don't see too often.

I didn't know you were allowed to ride bikes at Parys Mountain either! It looks like a (very!) mini Red Bull Rampage site - maybe on my next visit to Wales I'll bring my DH mountainbike and a shovel and try and craft some lines in there!

That's pretty cool. Were you just using the quadcopter with a GoPro attached or was there one of those expensive gimbal devices as well? How much flight time do you get out of it?

I was trying to follow them fairly close which was hard going as I couldn't see the drone for half of the circuit they were doing...and there were 3 elevation changes of 30 foot so was having to use the fpv screen to fly with. Go pro is on a gimbal. Started off with a cheap £50 2 axis Chinese gimbal which did a good job but this is a 3 axis gimbal which adds to smooth video when flown properly ie not like this. And KLR this is on my doorstep so give me a shout when your over and I'll come film you! Smile

I think drone operators try to avoid being too close to the action for safety reasons. I've seen a clip from motocross where a rider hit a drone mid jump and didn't stick the landing because of it.

Very nicely done. I'd use a filter to reduce the amount of light coming into the lense, but still, very cool. Thumbs Up

I like how the lads were just doing normal trail stuff and not showing off, that was pretty cool of them to make it easier for you to get to grips with moving targets. Thumbs Up

I didn't mean close enough to touch it. Obviously if you were going to do some kind of actual production you would plan all the shots so you'd know where the rider was going to be at all times assuming nothing went wrong. I wouldn't be trying to do close tracking shots on some random person I'd just met or someone riding at an event.

Trouble with drones is that just like everything else in a camera bag it's a good tool but not something you really want to be using throughout your entire video. Sure there are lots of great examples out of there of videos filmed entirely on a drone but there are also lots of terrible videos out of there of drones being really high up in the air over boring landscapes.

I'd love one for my camera bag but the expense of getting a good stabilised set up rules them out for me. I'd rather just hire someone to come in and do it for me on a production.

/OT

Bladerunner - Yeah if I end up over that way then I'll let you know! I'd bring my cameras too so maybe we could do a BCF video collaboration Thumbs Up
