I'm repairing a laptop for my GF's aunt. It is a Lenovo 570 Running Windows 7 HP

The initial problem was, it wouldn't shut down and would just hang on the Shutdown screen.

When I looked at it I saw it was trying to install windows updates but hanging on the second one. The first thing I did was turn off the update service and clear out the updates already downloaded then tried to shut it down again. Instead it now hung on the shutdown screen. After trying a few other things, stripping out all non essential services/startup programs etc. Windows Action Center popped up saying something along the lines of there are files that cannot be read on the hard disk run a error something or other (I know it as Chkdsk). I did this and it found 4 files that needed the Clusters repaired, it did this and it appeared to fix the issue it shuts down fine now. However I tried to install all the updates and all the Network Devices will not load correctly.

I tried the 'Community Addon' Suggestion here but it didn't work.

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc725584(v=ws.10).aspx

It wouldn't uninstall the device. You tell it to uninstall and it says it does it however the device says in device manager. I have also tried updating the drivers but no joy.

Any ideas?

Edit:- The adaptors were all fine before I ran the chkdisk.
Edit 2:- I ran another chkdisk and it came back with no errors.

Yep hard drive is on the way out.

I suspect it is a Z570 so its 3-4 years old with a WD Blue 750gb hard drive that has a work life of 2-3 years. Replace the hard drive with an SSD, Crucial MX100 512gb works nicely reloading off the restore discs and then scrape the original hard drive for files.

If it is a Z570 I can run you off the restore discs as its what I am using to post this on.

I would suggest at the same time replacing the DVD drive with a 1tb WD Green with an upgraded to 3 year warranty and using the DVD drive in an external case. making up the memory to 8gb, standard for most was 6gb. The battery will also be on the way out so will need replacing shortly as well. Its worth doing all this as iirc they can be fitted with an early i7 Sandybridge four core + HT cpu such as the 2630QM (35W oem ~vs~ 45W 4 core offset extra 10W with the SSD) which combined with the GT630M secondary graphics card makes them a bit of a cheap monster.

There is a possible workaround by reloading the drivers from disc but I suspect it would be a temporary reprieve. I have worked on an Asus K53E running windows 7 that after 4 years constant use by a foolish child couldn't run its network drivers until after a complete reinstall of windows.

I'll let them know, I'm not doing any upgrades to it, I don't think they'll care.
