PostPosted: 22:20 - 20 Apr 2015    Post subject: Should I complaint? Reply with quote

About 6 weeks ago I had a local garage replace the fork stanchions on my bike as it's chewed through two sets of seals in the last 18 months.

When I got the bike back I notices what looks like heat marks on the fork legs but I didn't pay too much attention at the time. Looking at it now the job looks to be badly finished. There is the weird heat marks. The bottom of the fork legs have been chipped. The dust seals are a little tore up. The right leg looks to be badly chipped at the back of the leg that the dust seal doesn't sit flat. Also above the yoke on the right stanchion there is some pit marks, not a big deal but I have just paid for new ones.

The question is should I complaint or I am just being to picky about this? Does anyone know why there would be these heat marks? Could the chipping on the legs be repaired?

If go back to complain then I want to be informed and know what I'm talking about.

A few pictures to see what I mean.

That's some dodgy workmanship right there, which set of cockeyed clowns did that then had the cheek to charge for fucking your bike?

Please, double check that all the bolts on the front end are not loose.

Either your eyes are FUBAR or your screen is.

Looks to me as though someone has put a little drift in there and missed it with the hammer, repeatedly.

6 weeks after is a long time, they will say it has happened since.

Heat marks - its common to use a torch to get them out. The paint should not be damaged and the marks should wipe/polish off easily. Either they are overcooked or lazy bastards. I would be urgently questioning if they replaced the bushings, as the PTFE coating will have melted away. If they did not charge for the parts, they havent.

The screwdriver marks and damage to the dust seals is shit. They do not look new. Theres no reason to pry up and damage new dust seals unless the job was bodged.

The stanchion marks are another sign they dont give a shit, and possibly they are low quality stanchions that wont last 5 minutes in winter. Refund ASAP.

Pics of rest of bike? how much did you pay for the work? Did they do the previous work - "two sets of seals in 18 months"?

It happened since / they were already like that / that was the condition you supplied the parts in.

Did you take "before" pictures?

You don't ask, you don't get, but I doubt you'll be getting anyway.

Best of luck.

Hard to tell but those dinks in the stanchion look like they are up between the yokes and not down near the seals.

Still is a travesty and needs to be sorted.

To play devil's advocate, I put it to you that these marks have been there at least for the last 18 months.
I've not heard of a bike needing two sets of fork seals in that short space of time, even if it was left outside uncovered, at the mercy of the elements.
The fact that 'you didn't pay too much attention' at the time you received the bike back from the latest repair suggests you didn't realise, and have never realised the potential for seal damage from the fork damage in question.
The fact that you have posted your predicament on an internet forum reinforces my conclusion.

I therefore have to recommend that the jury record a verdict of not guilty for the local garage.

Case dismissed.

Thanks for the replies, I'll try to answer everything.

The dents are near the yoke so that wont cause the seals to go but it's a new stanchion so it shouldn't have dents. Their is too many of them in small area to be stone chips. Saying that I'm not too worried about it.

I didn't pay for the the first two sets of seals. When I bought the bike from them they said they would replace the seals. About 8 months after that the seals started to leak. I took the bike back and they replaced the seals for free. The right seal when went again and this time they told me the stanchions needed replaced or the seals would just leak again.

I wasn't charged for the bushings so they must not have changed them. I didn't supply the parts, the garage ordered them. The stanchions were £230. Total bill was £448 but I had other work done at the same time.

When i got the bike back from the repair I thought well that not pretty but I trusted the garage to have done the job correctly. I've used the garage for the last 8 years.

Saying that the repair has been bothering me. Not knowing any other bikers to take a look at it and having no real mechanical knowledge myself. I thought it was best to ask for advice before I went back to the garage.

Thanks for the tip about the heat marks, i'll try polishing them tonight and see if that works.

My real worry is the chipping on the fork legs. It pretty bad on the right side and the seal doesn't sit flat. Can it be repaired or would the bottom part of the leg will need replaced?

Thanks for all the help Smile

if you are talking about your last picture, that's just the dust cover, the seal sits inside the top of the fork leg, so maybe not a big issue (they look cracked though so probably quite old). Sounds like it's possible the forks have had a head-on at some point and been straightened but are no longer quite true. (Although you say the stanchions are new (but have bad chipping))
Without knowing their history, it could be anything including crap in fork oil

All I can say is that I paid for new stanchion so I'm hoping their are new. I was also charged for new outer seals so i presume that's the dust seals and new fork oil.

So it sounds like I do have a case to go back the garage and complain?

They'll probably tell you to get fucked with it being six weeks since the job was done. Doesn't mean you shouldn't kick off to fuck though.
