I'm having issues on my works network with 2 laptops on WIFI accessing shares and a networked printer. They can access the internet with no problems but when I try to access the server or print then it is patchy at best. Printing can come through up to a couple of hours later, if at all. Access to the server will usually fail for the first few times, if I try to ping or tracert to it then it will generally work after a few attempts, access to the shares will then work OK.

The setup that I have is a router (192.168.2.1) with most of the machines on LAN into it, including the main server (192.168.2.4) and a network printer (192.168.2.121). Also on that LAN I have a 2nd wifi router (192.168.2.254) which the 2 problem laptops (192.168.2.8 & 9) connect to. I also have a machine on wired LAN into the 2nd router and this machine has no problems at all with access.

We're running a workgroup and all IP addresses are fixed in the 192.168.2.xxx range.

Any ideas?

I don't have your answer, I'm afraid. But out of interest, do you have the same issues connecting to router #1 on WLAN?

Also, which OS are you using?

No issues getting to router #1 and internet access is fine through the router. Running Windows 7.

Hmm, it's strange. I'd expect it to either work or not work. Maybe log into the router and have a good look around the settings, is it set to just act as a switch and access point?
I've always found networking on Windows 7 to be quite simple, but have never set up a whole office using it (only my home!)

No, because the server is plugged into it.

right ok, you using the switch on the back of the routers?

how come you have two routers - are they both gateways, or are you just using one as a switch?

The first is a gateway, the 2nd is being used as a switch/wireless access point. Sorry for not making that clear earlier.

I used to do a two router thing when I wanted to extend the range throughout my old place, with both of them running DD-WRT. I took the fourth Ethernet port on the first router which was hooked up to the modem to the WAN port on the second router, although the WAN was turned into a standard Ethernet port so all computers were on the same subnet/IP address range. The wireless N on both was set to channels at either end of the range, so in this case 1 and 13. The latter is best as a lot of UK routers don't go above channel 11 so less issues with interference from neighbouring routers. Didn't have a network printer but never had any real issues with general networking stuff, all the devices that needed to see each other could and connection speeds were decent even with six or seven things using the WLAN. Short of everyone trying to stream HD movies wirelessly on those devices it was a decent setup, and cheap cos it used two D-Link DIR-615s which were about a tenner each second hand.

ok is router 1 wireless?

are the router services all turned off on access point/ router 2?

can you set up a syslog?

what im thinking is something is happening on router 2 an its trying to "route" things all weird an wonderful....you just need to isolate bits to test - if that makes sense

Yup, but too far away to be an issue.

Yup.

I don't think so, it's a BT Business Hub and AFAIK that kind of access is locked.

It does make sense. I might just buy a straight forward access point and try that.
