I know it's still in development and you can get your hands on a dev kit but does anyone have one / tried one / getting one?

At the moment, it'd be for watching movies, rather than developing anything. Seen quite a few videos on YouTube of people watching films on them and it looks amazing.

I have been toying with the idea of getting one, but would probably need to upgrade my desktop to support it.

But at the moment I have more pressing things to spend my money on

Yup, got one. I have the DK1, which has the lower resolution than the current release.

TBH, it'd be totally useless for watching films IMO. Flat media tends to look weird in them. I've not tried a 3D film, but I can't imagine that it has enough Z depth to properly capitalise on the Rift hardware yet.

It's very good for gaming, although you have to know your controls inside out - there's no chance of getting a quick look at the keyboard/controller with the headset on. Sounds obvious I know, but it makes playing Elite a challenge.

I have the DK2...I feel it does need more resolution to be truly immersive. If you have good vision you can still clearly see the individual pixel on the screen.

I second this, it is still too low resolution to be practical.
I really hope they'll manage to come up with big enough displays for the final product

I don't think this is a fad at all, I think this is the next big thing (just like Rippln!) but seriously, when they perfect this over the next 12-18 months, it's going to change the way we do a lot of things.

Gaming, movies, simulators, training, possibly avatars in the next few years.

I think it will be sticking around. I can see plenty of applications for VR. Like jay said training and simulations for one.

It is definitely going to be a huge thing for simulators. But I think it'll stay confined to gaming though. In its current state it's not practical enough for mainstream use, mostly because when you're wearing it you (obviously) can't see anything else. That makes it really awkward to use with people around.

People have already added cameras to them so you can have an overlay of what's going on around you, should you so wish it. OVRVision is a good (if somewhat pricey) example thereof.
