Okay, so this morning while Mrs Grr was upstairs showering I had that urgent morning call. Normally I can wait
until she's finished up there, but not today. It was a right now kind of poo. So I go into our downstairs loo (which
is about 1200mm x 1000mm) and without really paying much attention dropped the trousers and back onto the
seat and sit down. Stood up again twice as quick as I sat down as I picked up a half dozen tiny razor sharp pieces of
toughened opaque glass in my cheeks which were present on the toilet seat. They weren't really big enough to see easily
on the white loo seat but I felt them alright. Because opaque glass is differently manufactured to clear glass it broke
very jaggedly and some of the debris was almost like glass dust.

How?

Right above the cistern there's a window. Fixed pane with fanlight at the top, the top window was unlatched
(handle in open position) but closed. The inner pane of glass had broken during the night. Onto the window sill,
floor and toilet seat/bowl as the toilet was lid up when it happened.

It's a thing apparently. And given I worked at a window factory many years ago for a while, a thing I was completely
unaware of despite handling more frames and DGUs than most people ever will in their lives. Anyway it looks like it was
caused by temperature difference as there's a small oil filled rad in my downstairs loo which is on a thermostat, the
loo itself is in an un-heated extension on the side of my house. It was super cold here last night and I think the rad
just kept pumping out the heat til the temp difference made the inner pane crack, I thnk cold air was pulled across the
pane because it wasn't latched shut properly allowing a very cold draught in.

Quote:
Heat coming from inside
Winter is also a time where windows are expected to cope with large changes in temperature from within, as central heating kicks in. The biggest threats to your windows from within come in the form of acute, local thermal shock; typically from a radiator or fireplace right next to your window.

If you’ve got an under-window radiator, then it’s worth providing some protection in the form of curtains which fall behind the radiator, and protect the window from thermal shock. You’ll also want to ensure that there is adequate airflow to the window from the rest of the room.

The downstairs loo is in the bit of my house I'm pulling down this year and renewing so not bothering to replace the glass,
the outer pane is undamaged so I'm just gonna leave it, the whole window will be going in the skip in a few weeks so
as long as the outer pane holds I'll leave it be. But yeah, I learned a couple of things today.

Always have a check before reversing and thermal shock is a thing. Thumbs Up

I was doin' alright there for a minute, pleased at the prospect of spending some lengthy moments contemplating Grr666s arse, with or without shards. Until the details about the full load on board. Put me right off me cornflakes, it did.

Yes, yes, I know its 2am, nothing wrong with having cornflakes at 2am after a night out, is there.

My energy provider (EDF) deciding to increase my monthly direct debit by 40%.

It's their nefarious justification for doing this that really pisses me off. Thing is, I'm currently on the cheapest possible available deal, since I always change tariff/supplier every 12 months to get the best price. My current fixed-rate one ends in March, at which point I'll be off; however for the purpose of setting my projected bill for the next 12 months, EDF assumes that I'll be reverting to their full-price, non-discounted tariff between March and January 2020 - hence my monthly payments need to increase dramatically to achieve this. Bloody outrageous. I CBA to argue the toss with them now; and will just wait until I quit in March and make damned sure it all comes out in the wash.

Was there not a similar thread but with water elsewhere on the forum? Might've been mpd actually??

I would have thought it's a complete breach of contract them doing this - it's not an agreed things surely? It's a bit like you pay direct debit for bike insurance and your insurer assuming you'll be with them next year and starting to take payments for it!

The government and corporations are scum - literally draining the publics pockets in the name of greed. I say government because they do sweet FA in regards bollockings of firms for this. I fear it will get worse.

Okay, didn't want to take it all Bodyguard but nothing spectacular or hilarious. I just had to hover because it
was already well on the way. "The trailers had started..." Is another way you could describe it. So yes, I
had to just clatter away regardless, knowing full well I had mashed some glass into my own arse cheeks. But without
knowing how much more there was on the seat I wasn't about to sit back down again. It was all over pretty quickly.

Lesson to be learned: leave the seat AND lid down, if you have a Mrs complaining about the seat being left up. Thumbs Up
