Brick Wall
Trying to book a delivery from Tesco for next weekend when I am starting a dogsitting gig, and there's no fucking slots.

WTF are these people on?

I can get something delivered to my house today (if I had booked it before 1pm, which I haven't so I am getting it on Wednesday, which suits me fine) ... but I can't get something delivered in Bromley in over a week's time. FFS.

I thought they employed thousands more staff to cope with this crap?

I've been looking for HY21W amber indicator bulbs, to replace HY10W which are not really bright enough. The only trouble is, I think they're a little too long. The HY10W itself is about 30mm long

Halfords. Dear God!

Online chat:

Me: Hi, I'm looking at your indicator bulb, it says on the pack "927 HY21W", can you tell me how long it is, please, it's got to fit into a housing and space is a bit tight.

Support: Off the top of my head, I'd say 27/28mm.

Me: That's great.

Support: I'll get my Tech to check... (time passes)... well, it's 20mm.

Me: Oh. Is that off a website, or an actual measurement?

Support: That's off our database.

Bugger. So that's got as much chance of being true as anywhere else I have looked at (probably not then), and I want to be sure.

So, call the local Halfords branch. They can measure it, can't they....

Me: Hi, I'm looking at your website at an indicator bulb, "927 HY21W", can you tell me how long it is overall, please?

Moron: What's the code?

Me: It says on the packaging, which I'm looking at on your website, "927 HY21W Car Bulb".

Moron: OK. What's the vehicle?

Me: It's for an aftermarket motorbike indicator.

Moron: What is the motorbike?

Me: It's an aftermarket indicator, not original, I don't know what sort it is.

Moron: It will be the same length as the one that's in it.

After a fruitless minute trying to get someone to measure the bloody thing, I gave up.

So, what to do? I know! I'll try Ring, since thay make the bulb! Their website says: Product dimensions (mm): HxWxD 27x8x8. Really? So I actually ring Ring, and get Tech Support.

RTS: (with a down to earth-sounding Leeds accent) Hello, you've got technical support.

Me: I've been trying to find out how long your R927 Replacement miniature HY21W amber indicator bulb is. Loads of websites give different sizes, yours says 27 by 8 by 8mm, but I'm not sure it's right, can you tell me.

RTS: Bloody websites. They're not always correct.

Me: You're telling me, I've been going round the twist.

RTS: I'll look in me book.

RTS: They're 37 by 9 by 9. I'll go and get someone's arse kicked about the website.

So. The next thing to do is to see if a 37mm long bulb will fit, and if it will, buy bulbs and a suitable flasher unit.

We've been having weekly Tesco deliveries since lockdown started, and found similar - however we came to realise that they release vacant delivery slots in batches. So on Sundays, the whole of next week appears to be booked up. But on Monday morning, no problem getting our usual early Tuesday evening delivery slot.

Shit, have I let the cat out of the bag now?

For three weeks now I've been attempting to help Nobby's second noblet catch up with the months of lockdown school work that he hadn't started. Rolling Eyes

I'm unsure if anything has actually been achieved from the two pieces of work done each day. Don't know how long it should take 14 year olds to do stuff but it seems to take fucking ages to do what seems like not much.

Why are you doing that I hear you asking and the answer to that is because I offered and said I would. At that point I had no idea quite how much there was or how long it would all take. Laughing

Sigh.

It did take 20 minutes for us to answer a question though.

But we know it was the right answer.

Anita (at a similar age) and I once spent 40 minutes discussing a maths question of her homework, but it was something to do with calculus or physics or some such.

We're not a pair of bimbos (although we like people to think that we are) ... and we were both smart enough to know that we knew *some* of the bits of the answer, or what we needed to achieve, but we just couldn't figure out how to get there in the correct steps to get the right answer.

Never did get the damn thing, just got bored and did the other questions.

Still ... turns out neither of us needed to know the answer in order to get decent jobs and support ourselves for our whole lives, so ... an unnecessary aggravation and waste of time that would have been better spent working on colouring in unicorns with rainbow pencils, really. Rolling Eyes

I studied computer science at uni in the early 90s and as part of this we studied pure maths.

The only subject I can’t help my 13 year old is maths, I’ve totally forgotten it.

Making single filament bulbs which have no specific orientation with offset pins is a dick-move all day long anyway. Making indicators which use said bulbs AND with a non-standard headroom is blatant profiteering to force you to buy bulbs off them.

There is absolutely no reason yours couldn't have been made as a BA9 fitting, at which point the world is your oyster in terms of choices.

Triumph do it too, as I found out when I tried to get LEDs bulbs for the speed twin flashers I fitted to my Enfield. They use low-headroom BAU15. So offset pins and a BAU15 LED (which are available but expensive in decent quality) or even a standard BAU15 doesn't fit due to headroom. Again, absolutely no good reason to have made them anything other than a BA15 other than to make it hard to get bulbs. You can pretty much only buy them from triumph or Osram.

A right wizard wheeze, presumably the bulb manufacturers are in on the act. It's inconceivable to me that money didn't change hands.

Wifies megane cabriolet.

Front near side dipped beam has gone. I hate doing those bulbs. Half the front has to come apart, battery out and it's still a nightmare to actually change the bulb.

According to the handbook you are meant to go in through a panel in the wheel arch. Yeah, right. Maybe Stinkwheel with his bovine proctologist hands but I can't get mine in there and do anything so it's demolish half the engine bay instead.

What took all of 5 minute on my old C-Max (and 4 of those was finding the box of bulbs) takes half an hour of skinned knuckles and bloody swearing.

Same on the Mitstubushi Colt I have, manual says through the wheel arch. As the wheel arch is filled with a wheel it's impossible.

So, jack up, wheel off, through the flap (narf) wheel on, jack down.

Pain in the ashley that is.

The wifes Daihatsu was the same.

Actually quite straightforwards if you just take the wheel off from the get-go. It gets annoying when you try to reach around stuff.

The tricky one with that car was getting into the boot to get the jump starter pack out when the battery was totally flat. I landed up with a head-torch and dentists mirror to locate the release toggles and you could only get to that after removing a hatch in the centre console to pull a third toggle then removing the parcel shelf.

Starter battery got moved to under the seat.
