Hi all,

I'm trying to fix a starting/running problem with a 2000 year GS500 that has been laid idle for a year and i'm now stuck.
With lots of choke and persuasion she'll start but then once i take the choke off or release the throttle she dies.
Lots of white smoke out exhaust.

This is what i have done so far;
drained old fuel and re-filled with fresh,drained carbs of old fuel.
New battery.
New sparks.

Checked using the side of the engine,both sparks are fine.

However one thing i have noticed which worries me is that immediately after replacing the new sparks,after running her on choke for a bit,i checked the sparks again and one was clean,the other was fouled with black soot i.e. running rich in that cylinder.
My dad said perhaps the piston rings are gone in that cyclinder?

Anyway,i've remove the carb's and K& N air filter (...noticed lots of red liquid in there which might be the fuel mixed with that red oil K&N use to lubriate the filter?) and i am going to look at the condition of the chambers and the choke mechanism.

Any help from you guys would be greatly appreciated as i thought the new sparks would sort it but sadly there's something more to it....life's never easy is it?

Thanks
Mark

They may come up well enough to run her on the road for a bit, but you could be right there. Unless you have access to an ultrasonic cleaner?
Worth looking at an overhaul kit too, may be cheaper than a second full carb setup.

Well after a good initial clean she started and i was able to get her back from my lockup and into my parents garage for proper cleaning.

I have a few questions hopefully you wise ones will know the answers for immediately;

The only jets i could not remove and clean are the pilot screws underneath near the float bowls (see 1st picture) well i managed to remove one but the other looks like someone has tried before me and has ruined the head.Now excuse my ignorance but these parts look like screws with needles at their end and so what i have done is put the one i managed to remove and clean back in to the same level as the immobile one. (measured the distance the immobile one is sat in its chamber with a caliper) is that ok?
Secondly my bike is a EY model and i have adjusted the pilot screws that live within the float bowl (see 2nd picture) 2 turns out as the manual says. Is this correct?

Should both of these pairs of pilot screws be 'two turns out'? or just the ones that are near the main jets?

Thanks for any help given ,hope my question is clear enough
