Hey guys,
I've never taken anyone on the back of my Z750 (Nor any other bike) but my other half wants to start coming along with me on rides. She usually rides her own nice little 125 scooter for work, but when we go out for a meal or something, we want to only take 1 bike with us. So I guess my question is this;

Does anyone have any advice for someone taking a passenger for the first time?

Im mainly concerned about, as I'm quite slim, I may not be able to hold the bike upright when stopped with another added person on. She rides so Im assuming leaning for corners wont be a problem ect.

Tell her not to lean close if she wants to keep her teeth and to estimate when you will brake. So as to hold on and or clamp knees.

TBH the only real difference is acceleration is nerfed and the turning is heavier plus the bike dives more under braking so you have to brake earlier.

If I can take a pillion (and I'm 5'6) you can.

Wait you mean the Z750 IL4 the one that vibrates really badly?

Then keep it above 6000rpm and ride in lower gear than you normally would expect crushed hips though. Very Happy

I am 5'5 and a half, Wink on tip toes and i am fine taking pillion. I can only flat foot on one side while the other one rests on the peg (and brake) or dangles for the lulz.

As mentioned above, acceleration is affected but to be fair you want them to be comfortable and feel safe, so speeding off is not going to achieve that anyways.

Leave a bigger gap than normal when in traffic as braking distance will be affected.

And I don't filter when a pillion is in attendance. (purely to make them feel comfortable and safe)

Choose easy roads with wide corners. Go at a time when traffic for your route is at a minimum. Remember that with the extra weight of a pillion it's not just handling that'll change, it's the whole lot: less acceleration, more stopping distance required. The technique for smooth gear changes with just you might suddenly feel jerky when you've two on the bike. Filter less or not at all. No risky overtakes, obviously. If you miss out your shoulder checks while riding solo (I know I usually substitute with mirror checks in some cases), put them all back in.

Like a lot of things on a bike learning techniques only goes so far, it's a case of making it smooth and natural so it becomes a case of feel. You might not be able to see your passenger but you can tell from their body language a little of what they're feeling - for someone I pillion with regularly, I can tell if they think I'm taking a corner more fast than they are comfortable with by the tensing up, it's a tangible thing.
