Has anyone transferred a private plate from one vehicle to another recently? I was wondering just how long the wonderful DVLA take to perform this magic.

That's 2 weeks now!

depends if the plate was originally issued by the DVLA, if the plate was issued by DVA it does take a fair bit longer since the DVA no longer exists having closed down in Oct this year, records relating to car reg and driving licence can and have been lost already.

Doh. Sounds like I'm in for a wait then.

I've put a deposit for a bike which is ready to go apart from the fact the previous owner is doing a plate swap from my new bike (reverting it back to its original generic plate) onto his bike which also had a private plate which is going onto a certificate.

I'm told all of the work on his new bike is done and the paper work for the swap on my bike was sent back 2 weeks ago.

I believe they are UK plates from the DVLA though.

But the plates could be either DVA or DVLA UK plates, are they originally from Northern Ireland ? N.I plates usually have a 3 letter 4 number format.

My dad just did it as part of a car sale. DVLA twunted it up in epic style, knocking it back twice for reasons that neither we nor apparently they could fathom. 6 weeks and three essentially identical applications later they finally relented.

They seem to be getting worse recently, if that's possible.

Not too sure. The dealer who I'm buying it from hasn't given me the registration numbers involved and I'm sure the DVLA will tell me nothing as I'm not the registered keeper.

Sounds about right going by the DVLA. I just can't understand why it takes so long to complete something that appears to be a very simple task.

The problem could be that the DVLA are trying to deal with a number that was issued in Northern Ireland by the DVA which was transferred to Swansea DVLA in October, loads of info has already been lost in the transfer. I have been trying to get one of those funny wonder V5 wotsits from Swansea DVLA for my 1988 reg 175cc bike which I have an old printed green book for but they say they have no details of the bike and that the bike does not exist as far as they are concerned, they have lost the DVA to DVLA info on my bike but it will not stop me getting an MOT or insurance but it will not have a registered keeper. Good luck in getting things sorted but bear in mind they have just taken on another 1.3 million plus registrations in the transfer and things do get lost.

They've been threatening to do reg transfers online for a while now, so it might just be surly sabotage by the paper shufflers. I wish I were joking.

The 6 week case I'm on about was UK <-> UK plates. They knocked it back just saying that the form was incorrectly filled in. Calling them wasn't any help because they don't (they said) keep details of rejection reasons. So we submitted it again with a covering letter asking them to tell us why it was being refused, which they ignored, again just rejecting it saying that it was incorrect.

So, third time was a written complaint (no response to that yet) and another transfer application with a note saying that it was now the subject of a complaint. Then they relented.

Useless cower of shunts.

Wow 6 weeks - jeezo. Well, I can't be sure of the origin of the plates as they are under ownership of the previous owner. I'd have to go through the garage to try and contact him unless I get lucky on BCF or the ZX14 forums. It's unlikely the garage will hand out his details.

I'm possibly just being impatient but, i'd prefer to have the bike sitting in my garage rather than theirs.

Note - i've put a couple of hundred on the bike to secure it. It's immaculate and low(ish) miles otherwise i'd go elsewhere.

Currently putting my van back to original reg number in anticipation of upcoming disposal. Sent off forms and V5/MOT certificate last Wednesday. Have received amended V5 and MOT back today (week later)..….just waiting for retention certificate now....hopefully not too far behind😕

Recently?

I'm not aware of them monging it up this badly in the past; I suspect that they've "streamlined" something in the bowels of Swansea.
