What's the crack with de-catting and MOT then? Is it my single-malt befuddled brain or do I remember some new shit about it now?

I wasn't sure that bikes until recently have been emissions tested to see if the Cat is working?

De-catting any performance engine allows you to run a more power and throttle response friendly air/fuel ratio, so performance and drivability are often much better with no cat in the system. De-catting should be done at the same time as fitting a performance non road legal system for maximum gains IMO.

As for MOT's well my old Rover 220 has a de-cat pipe fitted, and passes it's MOT just fine (at a friendly garage! Wink ) It runs way to rich for a cat to survive so having one is not an option.

Does it now? When you say most, how big is your sample set? How many fails and passes are you using for comparison?

my R1 has been de-cat for some time .. never have I had a gass test applied to a bike and the testin station has the equipment .

De-Cat is not an issue as long as the exhaust is "complete,secure and not too noisy".

Think it depends how rough the testers night was.

I have mine done at a council test center and always get an advisory for loud exhaust.

Even I would call my exhaust excessively loud, but it's never been failed for it. Laughing

Ah I see, The previous MOT's that came with my bike all had the same advisory, but surprised me on my first MOT with it that it wasnt even mentioned (it has no baffles and is fairly loud)

its a gass analyser are you sayin its totally unfeasible that it be used on a bike application... even though the law does not require it at this point in time ?

Simply as various MOT stations I have been to DO NOT BOTHER with an emission test on bikes.

Weather is right or wrong is not for me to tell em off.
I trust you have never come across a test centre that is determined to fail your car/bike for what ever reason/s they can find regardless how trivial/relevant

Fair enough fellas, I must admit that I am fairly new to bikes, my first two were 1 new and one 1yr old, current bike came with a year's ticket on it.
So haven't experienced the 2 wheeled MOT experience my self, just observed a couple while waiting for the motor a few times.
I based my info based on my cager experience and was clearly mistaken feel free to deal some more Butthurt.

Regarding the other point I have seen cars handed back with advisories such as "unable to test seatbelts as child seat/s fitted"
While the punter was waiting during the test.
Things like that is what I call anal, all beit is not a fail it is an unnesessary advisory as the customer was present and could have removed the child seat.

This could be useful if you buy a motor with "a years ticket" issued within the last 5 days for instance and it is an absolute death trap that would have never passed an mot legitimately.

Probably not. Likely that if they bring it in then it will apply emissions limits based on what the vehicle should have produced when new. This is what happened when emissions testing was introduced for cars.

Quite possible that if there was external evidence the cat had been removed then that would be a fail as well.
