hard life by the looks of it,
id like to think i could manage, but it looks to be a far cry from the ease of life for hunters and trappers in nz
how similar is the czech language to russian?
could you understand them if one spoke to you??

There are some similarities between Czech and Russian language.
Russian language is one of those, that have many the same words and grammar but when I watch a film in Russian, I get only 20% of information really. I can ask the basic stuff and I bet I'd be able to communicate at some level. But, I've never talked to a Russian, although I can use azbuka. In fact, every Czech, before the 1989, had to learn Russian language at secondary (high) school. One of the final exams was mandatory in Russian language. But, I'm too young for that.
Basically every slavic language is quite similar one to each other. As a Czech, living close to Poland and Slovakia, I can understand their language and they can understand me. Well, Slovak language is based on Czech, so it's even easier for us to understand each other, hence Czechoslovakia before the 1993. I can also understand Croatian language quite well, tons of Czech tourists go to Croatia every single year only because we can understand the language and they understand us + they've got sea. The whole former Yugoslavia has got a quite similar vocabulary to ours.
In the future, I'm gonna get better at German and might gonna learn Russian language properly.
